SPREADING THE WEALTH
The voting booth marks the moment when a final decision is made, one
favorite is picked and then there’s no turning back. But with the
selection of the next U.S. president about 17 months away, some individuals
are showing support for as many candidates as their hearts desire — and
their checkbooks allow.

NEW PAGE ON OPENSECRETS.ORG SHOWS DEMOGRAPHICS OF PRESIDENTIAL DONORS
To really assess a presidential candidate’s fundraising strength and
potential, you have to look deeper than the total amount they’ve raised.
How many larger donors do they have? And how many of those donors have
hit their contribution limit at this early stage in the long campaign?
OpenSecrets.org’s Race for the White House section now shows how the
candidates’ donors are distributed by dollar amount. Also, the site’s
Donor Lookup now allows you to search contributions to all presidential
candidates by name, employer, state or ZIP code.

OPENSECRETS.ORG WINS ITS FOURTH WEBBY AWARD
The Center for Responsive Politics got some great news this week –
OpenSecrets.org has won the 2007 Webby Award for being the world’s best
website about politics. It’s our fourth Webby trophy in the contest’s 11
years. (We last won in 2006.) A panel of Internet experts selected
OpenSecrets for this award, but many of you also voted in the “People’s
Voice” competition. We weren’t able to pull out a win there, too; the good
folks at FactCheck.org will get that trophy. But we’re delighted that
another “online Oscar” will be going on our shelf. Thanks for supporting
OpenSecrets.org in this prestigious competition.

REPUBLICANS DEBATE TONIGHT IN CALIFORNIA
Democrats were mostly polite during their debate in South Carolina last
week, but analysts say tonight’s Republican debate in Simi Valley,
Calif., could be more heated. The 10 GOP candidates will likely discuss
abortion, immigration and other divisive issues at the Ronald Reagan
Presidential Library. Californians gave more money to presidential
candidates than any other state in the first quarter of ‘07 — $19.8 million, 62
percent of which went to Democrats. With $5.1 million from the Golden
State, Hillary Clinton has collected the most among the Democratic
candidates, while Mitt Romney leads the Republicans with $3.1 million. In
the 2004 presidential and congressional elections, California ranked
first in contributions, favoring Democrats with 59 percent of its $241.1
million. This election, because California has moved up its primary to
Feb. 5, the state is more than just a source of cash for candidates. You
can watch tonight’s debate beginning at 8 PM EDT on MSNBC.
