Brit Hume And Fox News Winners Of The Debate

After watching Chris Matthews fail miserably, with what can only be described as a waste of time(watch video), it was refreshing to see Brit Hume host a respectable debate.

So how do the questions from the first GOP debate, moderated by MSNBC and the Politico.com, match up to the questions posed by the FOX News panel in the second debate?

It’s not even close. Opening up the Media Blog vault and reviewing the first GOP debate after having just watched the second was a revealing exercise. I think the MSNBC/Politico questions actually got stupider with age.

By contrast, the FOX News questions were serious and the questioners tenacious in pursuing answers. Even the questions that viewers submitted to FOX via e-mail were far better than “What do you dislike most about America?” and the other nonsense that got past the Politico’s electronic gatekeepers.

Watch the video. I created a montage of MSNBC questions first, followed by a montage of FOX questions. The increase in the seriousness and difficulty of the questions is comparable to that between high school and college:

Praise for Fox News from David Frum:

One winner: Fox News itself. The probing and incisive questions – and the willingness to follow up loose ends – meant that the 1-minute limit did not feel unduly constrained. Even more impressive: the questioners’ solid grip on their egos. No weird “look at me” questions. Always a keen awareness that the candidates are the people the audience has tuned in to see.Makes me think the Democrats did themselves an injury by denying themselves access not only to Fox’s audience but to its – yes – fair & balanced questioners.

The first Associated Press write-up filed at 12:31am Eastern manages not to mention Fox News’s sponsorship of the debate at all.

Looks like Rudy pulled out a win on this one!

  2. When Rudy slapped down Paul like a red headed step child, I saw the exact leadership qualities displayed that will probably garner my vote. It is a willingness not just to do the right thing, but to not be afraid to say it is the right thing. It’s a willingness to defend it.

Shakey issues aside the man is a leader, and that’s exactly what we eneed now above all other things.

  5. That’s where I am at Ted…Well said!

  6. Like most of America, I’m not interested in Presidential debates right now. Of course most of my jading comes from the Candidate overload Iowans suffer before the election.

Curse you Jimmy Carter for starting this year-round forever campaigning.

I agree. I didn’t watch it either, nor do I have the desire to. But I saw the clip, and was impressed with what Rudy did.

  9. 2. Peejz,

Folks have been talking about finding the next Ronald Reagan. Rudy G. has that kind of potential I think.

I just hope he can live up to it.

  11. Listening to Glenn Beck- debate wasn’t in NYT until page A-18.

  12. I also believe there are alot of independents and democrats who mostly have moderate views and will see Rudy as a leader and vote for him as well. He certainly is the most impressive candidate I see so far.

Welcome back Peejz. We missed you.
