Today’s Opinion And Open Trackbacks

Some really good links:

Michael Medved: Should Mormonism Disqualify a Candidate?

Mitt Romney?s increasingly credible Presidential campaign raises urgent but uncomfortable questions about his Mormon faith. Does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints constitute a benevolent, mainstream religion or a dangerous cult with a deranged and bloody past?

Walter E. Williams: FDA: Friend or Foe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is charged with ensuring that only safe and effective drugs are marketed. Such a task is highly complex and fraught with difficulties. Consumers, the ostensible beneficiaries, should examine and question the incentive structure that FDA officials face.

John Stossel: The Double “Thank-You” Moment

Some people hate me because I defend free markets. Once someone accosted me on a New York City street and said, “I hope you die soon.”

Austin Bay: Counter-Insurgency and “The Single Narrative”

In war, the simple is difficult. Given the Internet and the glare of 24-7 news cameras, no war is more complex than contemporary irregular warfare.

Paul Greenberg: He-e-e’s Back! Jimmy Carter, President and Poet

It’s been quite a journey for Jimmy Carter – pretty much downhill ever since he took the oath of office. By now he’s got to say something particularly outrageous just to be called irrelevant.

Jacob Sullum: Bundles of Oy

Rep. John Murtha called the Lobbying Transparency Act “total crap.” Then the Pennsylvania Democrat voted for it, along with 381 of his colleagues, many of them equally afraid of appearing to oppose transparency.

Paul Weyrich: “;UNCLOS” or “LOST” – A Bad Idea Resurfaces

No bad idea is ever completely defeated in this country, perhaps in other nations as well. I have seen bad ideas surface again and again in this country.

Ben Shapiro: What I’m Doing To Stop Global Warming

According to the global left, the evidence is in: The earth is warming, and it’s all your fault. Don’t blame the sun. The giant ball of fiery gas responsible for all climate change over the past few million years isn’t the problem. It’s you.

Michelle Malkin: Doing the Booing Americans Won’t Do

The United States government is on the verge of approving a mass amnesty to millions of illegal aliens — a plan pushed aggressively by meddling Mexican officials who reap billions of dollars in remittances (illegal aliens’ earnings sent back to Mexico) without having to lift a finger to clean up their own country. And the thanks we get? Internationally televised public humiliation.

David Limbaugh: Keep a Sharp Eye on Warming Zealots

Whether or not blind faith in man-made, catastrophic global warming has become a new religion, many of its adherents, ironically, embrace it with the same type of unquestioning zeal they sloppily attribute to and summarily condemn in Christians.

Jack Kemp: Fighting a new war on poverty

Mario Cuomo of New York electrified the 1984 Democratic Convention with his tale of America as two cities, one rich and one poor, almost permanently divided into two classes. Today John Edwards is running for president on this same platform and using the same metaphor.

Jonah Goldberg: John Edwards Poor Scam

There’s a little hustler in every politician. But sometimes there’s a little politician in a hustler. Such is the case with John Edwards.

Thomas Sowell: A War of Words: Part II

With gasoline prices rising, political rhetoric is rising even faster. Liberals in Congress and in the media have launched a war of words, whose net result may well be a demand for some form of price control.

William F. Buckley: FIll ‘er up

The congressional initiative to take coal and transform it into a liquid that serves to replace various fuels is going to have a hard time.

Maggie Gallagher: ‘;Hypocrisy’ at the top

If you want to know why the immigration bill makes people so mad, just listen to the Bush administration defend it:

Mark M. Alexander: Immigration starts at the border or press two for compromise

Any debate about immigration is useless unless it begins with a commitment to secure our southern border and coastlines.

Rich Lowry: The Inevitability of the Car

Americans have arrived at an answer to high gas prices and concerns about global warming — buy more cars. According to a report in The New York Times, households with a small, gas-efficient car own, on average, almost three cars.

Bill Murchison: Happy Birthday, Big John

John Wayne’s 100th birthday, just before Memorial Day, invited a bit of reflection. I acknowledge a seeming discontinuity here: reflection; John Wayne. The Duke wasn’t about reflection, was he? He was about action. Wasn’t he?

Patrick J. Buchanan: Does ‘The Decider’ Decide on War?

Has Congress given George Bush a green light to attack Iran? For he is surely behaving as though it is his call alone. And evidence is mounting that we are on a collision course for war.

Kathryn Jean Lopez: Stigmatize Planned Parenthood

What’s so bad about Planned Parenthood? It’s a question Americans must wonder about as they see pro-lifers protesting or praying outside clinics. And it deserves an answer because it gets to the heart of some key and contentious questions we face as a society, one that is ever creeping toward a brave new world (in many respects already living in it) as biotechnological choices propagate.

Bruce Bartlett: Taking Ron Paul Seriously

As some readers of this column may know, the first “real” job I ever had was working for Congressman Ron Paul back in 1976. I went to visit him a few months ago and was pleased to see that he had not changed much at all since the days when I was a legislative assistant on his congressional staff.

Amanda Carpenter: Obama’s HillaryCare

On the heels of Hillary Clinton?s speech on universal health care last week, Barack Obama promised he would provide health insurance to every American by the end of his first term as President today. Like Hillary, Obama supports seizing the Bush tax cuts to pay for his plan and forcing insurance providers to enroll high-risk clients.

Roger Schlesinger: Half is better than none

Too many of us believe that if we can’t have what we want and need, it’s better to get nothing at all. Not true.

Cal Thomas: Unending War

Before Congress adjourned last week on another of its lengthy holidays, Speaker Nancy Pelosi repeated a phrase she has previously used about the war in Iraq. She again referred to it as “the Bush policy of unending war in Iraq.”

Frank J. Gaffney, Jr.: C.P.B.’s ‘Rosa Parks’ Treatment

Last Wednesday, the Oregon Public Broadcasting Service announced that it had reached an agreement with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) that seemed, at first blush, to represent a breakthrough: The national Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) would no longer prevent the airing of a film CPB commissioned as part of its ?America at a Crossroads? series called ?Islam vs. Islamists: Voices from the Muslim Center.?

William F. Buckley: Immigration Blues

The immigration bill is a mess, but how could it be otherwise? Messes are a part of democratic rule.
