The Amnesty Bill That Just Won’t Die

‘It’s aliiiive!’ from Michelle Malkin.

Bush-Reid-Kennedy will be working overtime the next few days to prop it back up on the Senate floor, reports the NYTimes:

Senate Democrats opened the door to reviving the stalled immigration measure on Sunday, calling on Republicans to resolve their internal divisions and produce an agreement on how to move the legislation forward. With Bush administration officials and Republican authors of the overhaul saying they had not given up on the bill, the spokesman for Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, said Mr. Reid would be willing to try again if Republicans agreed to a defined number of amendments and a time limit on debate.

“If and when Republicans can agree on a limited number of amendments and agree on the need to get this bill passed, Senator Reid is committed to finding room on the Senate schedule as soon as possible,” said Jim Manley, the spokesman, who said President Bush needed to play a role as well. “The hope is that he can apply enough pressure to provide the votes we need to get the bill out of the Senate.”

Mr. Bush is scheduled to visit the Capitol on Tuesday for a lunch with Senate Republicans. That meeting will come just days after the immigration proposal, one of his chief domestic priorities, was derailed when an effort to bring a two-week debate to a close came up far short of the votes needed.

On Sunday, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said the administration was “more determined than ever” to push the measure, which has drawn strong opposition from conservatives.

Don’t forget the amnesty hotline number1-800-417-7666–if you’d like to get through to your senators and help drive a stake through this monstrously bad bill once and for all.

There is a way to make this mess palatable to the citizenry of this country. Drop all references to allowing anyone here in violation of current immigration law to stay, increase fines for hiring anyone that any reasonable person would be lead to believe were in this country illegally to an exorbitant amount, increase workplace enforcement and border enforcement budget allocations to the point of being workable, give Ramos and Campeon full pardons, give Border Patrol officers immunity from prosecution for any actions that would be considered reasonably within the scope of their official duties (i.e. shooting violent border crossers but not drug dealing, smuggling, etc etc), Provide funding for equipment for volunteers willing to stand guard on the border to report illegal crossers, provide funding for construction of the border wall. Also include a provision for incarcerating illegals for a minimum 6 – 12 months if caught entering this country illegally more than once. As a misdemeanor, that would require nothing more than a magistrate to oversee that hearing and sentence the illegal. Prosecute them for any other crime that they commit without bail and provide for minimum sentencing.

I took a tour of Hoover Dam today, and honestly if they could build that in 5 years using 1930s technology, the comment that we can’t put up an effective barrier fence on our southern border is pure BS.

Once employers face losing their businesses should they be caught with illegals working for them, the jobs will dry up. Once it becomes obvious that we are going to deport those we catch with nothing but the shirts on their backs, and confiscate everything else (it’s property obtained through illegal activities and hence ill gotten gains.) Once these two things are done, the illegals will leave on their own accord. They’d rather leave with everything than be deported with nothing.
