We walked down this same path 21 years ago in 1986 when legalization of Illegals was part of a major immigration reform bill, which was appropriately titled the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. The relevant portion of the legislation that we commonly refer to as the Reagan Amnesty fell under Title II, Section 201. Legalization of Status.  They made promises then that obviously were not kept, or we wouldn’t be arguing over what to do with the 12-14 million illegals currently in this country. We enacted laws that were not enforced.  Michelle Malkin has ‘A message for the RNC’ . Here’s National Review’s message for the White House. And Allahpundit with Lindsey Graham on amnesty: “This is no longer about immigration”

That’s why the majority of the public isn’t buying it. We heard all the same lies before, in 1986, and they sold us a bill of goods. Every politician who votes for this in congress should be thrown out of office.
The failure to deal with the immigration problem, especially in light of the post 9/11 security issues, is one of the major failures of the Bush admin.
1-Where have you been young man?
Welcome back:wink:
Hi, I have been in Switzerland for a few weeks and the net access where I was located was expensive, unreliable, and slow so I didn’t get any web time in other than email.
I was so happy to get back and find out that the Shamnesty bill was dead. But they’ve vowed to keep fighting. Probably the only way to put a stake through it is to throw out the Klowns who voted for it. Each and every one of them.
I hope you had time to relax and take in the sights:smile:
I did, lots of time after work and on the weekends. And thanks for the compliment (“young man”
).
Politically, though it was interesting. I could not avoid questions and comments from the Swiss people. All of the lies, misrepresentations, and attacks by the Democrites and the Left in American media of course have propagated into the European media, where they are endlessly repeated. So almost to a person the Swiss people despise Bush, cannot understand how Americans tolerate such an out of control Gov’t, and think Hillary is the best choice for the next Pres!
Hi Robert. I missed you as well. Glad you’re back and it sounds like you are full of tales. I don’t have the nerve to travel out of the country so I just spent a week in Tennessee just touristing the country music scene. They don’t like the ‘shamnesty’ bill either. There was a billboard is downtown Nashville pronouncing ‘VOTE NO’
I agree that after 9/11 immigration laws should have been enforced and tightened. For the life of me I don’t understand Bush’s position on this.
The enforcemnt will come when the third world government/people/rulers/oligarchs are running this country you will be put in prison for talking out against the enemies of freedom, that is the only enforcement that any of you will see.
Hi BonBon and thank you for the kind words. I had never been to Europe before and didn’t look forward to the 15 hours total flight time but I had to go for business reasons.
It is good to be back in the States. I enjoyed my time there but as Dorothy said “There’s no place like home”.
IMO this illegal immigration problem is as big a problem as terrorism. And the solution is also every bit as important. If we don’t change course and get on the right track now, in 20 years (or less) the WOT won’t matter anymore. America as we know it will be gone.
The problem is that once this catastrophe is voted into effect, it will be impossible to repeal. It will immediately legitimize 12- 20 million illegal aliens and as many as can get across the border during the 12 months between signing and the end of the amnesty period. Any politician that claims this is not amnesty is lying through his teeth. They keep talking about the fines, but the fines only occur IF the illegal wants to become a citizen and then the amount of the fine is determined by their ability to pay. In other words as long as they don’t try to become naturalized, they face NO PENALTIES for entering the US illegally. If they decide to become naturalized, they will only be fined as much as some bureaucrat determines that they are able to pay. Can you say an open invitation to fraud? Slip some worthless bureaucrat a thousand dollars and the fine goes from $5000 to $50.
What makes this an absolute national security nightmare is the fact that as long as the person presents two affidavits saying they were in this country on 12/31/2006 within 24 hours they’ll receive a Z-1 visa to roam the country at will. Hell, if I were Osama Bin Laden, Ayman Al Zawahiri, and Adam Godon, I’d slip across the border, present the ICE office affidavits provided by my two cohorts and disappear into the Muslim underground in this country. We would NEVER find him if he slipped into the US under an alias. Hell, the Tucson Islamic Center is less than 90 minutes north of the border and has been investigated for the views of its Imam and numerous members have been linked to the 9-11 highjackers.
Of course, our stalwart senators insist that this isn’t amnesty nor will it damage national security. Both positions are patently false. I want to see how many marchers show up for the anti illegal alien rally on Saturday morning. I’m sure there will be a number of amnesty supporters trying to disrupt the rally. Personally, with the level of violence related to the influx of illegals from countries with little respect for human life, I’ll be exercising my 2nd Amendment right and utilizing my CCW.
Robert,
Sounds like you took a redeye from Los Angeles to Zurich or something. I did that about 15 years ago.
Too bad we have such a dishonest press. I wonder what the Democrats will do when the world wakes up to their dishonesty?
Not a poll follower, but new poll says 80% of Americans are against this immigration bill.
