Just How Good Is National Healthcare (free)? What Did Moore Fail To Tell You?

Let’s take a look:

  • He suggests, for example, that Canada’s waiting lists are mere inconveniences, interviewing apparently healthy Canadians who claim they have no problem getting care. Yet nearly 800,000 Canadians aren’t so lucky. The Canadian Supreme Court has pointed out that many Canadians waiting for treatment suffer chronic pain and, “Patients die while on the waiting list.”
  • Similarly, Moore shows happy Britons who don’t have to pay for their prescription drugs. But he didn’t talk to any of the 850,000 Britons waiting for admission to National Health Service hospitals. Every year, shortages force the NHS to cancel as many as 50,000 operations. Roughly 40 percent of cancer patients never get to see an oncology specialist. Delays in getting treatment are often so long that nearly 20 percent of colon-cancer cases considered treatable when first diagnosed are incurable by the time treatment is finally offered. Perhaps Moore could have talked to some of these folks?
  • Moore also slides over the facts when he implies that the French system is “free.” It’s funded through a 13.55 percent payroll tax, a 5.25 percent income tax and other taxes on tobacco, alcohol and drug-company revenues. And the system is still running a $15.6 billion deficit.
  • And French patients still have to pay high copayments and other out-of-pocket expenses, and physicians can bill patients for charges over and above what the government reimburses. As a result, 92 percent of French citizens have private health insurance to complement the government system. Yet there remain shortages of modern health-care technology and a lack of access to the most advanced care.

Why didn’t Moore talk about this? And don’t kid yourself..this was very much a political tool to benefit the Democratic Party:

The exclusive showings — tickets were $40 for the movie, with another $100 getting you into a post/pre-party bash with Moore — were a fund raiser for the Democratic Party of dinky Antrim County — a traditional Republican stronghold. Moore and his wife, producer Kathleen Glynn, moved to the remote area a few years back and Glynn serves as vice-chair of the local party.

Oh and let me give you some insight on that rinky dink town of Bellaire, as you can see from the pricing…it is a lake house haven on Torch Lake that is booming in the summer and gets some action in the winter if snow conditions are good …….nothing poor about the area, just small town…but I guess that shouldn’t be told either?

  1. Typical Moore tactics.

His first documentary was really good, but since them he has made these propaganda films that are filled with half truth, twisting of facts and oputright lies.

  2. Ted-

It would have been just as easy to do it right as it would have to do it his way!

  3. Well, Tofu, how are you going to spin this? Ask Peejz what her due dilligence was? Demand that Peejz post some defense from Media Matters or Think Progress? What about the due dilligence telling us about their agenda and biases?

  4. 2.

    Easy? xYes.

    Profitable? No.

One truism regarding Mr. Moore. Controversy creates cash. When he war profiteered from F911, that became a stark realism regarding him.

  5. 3- No, PCD, I’ll just wait for you to blame homosexuals or something on our healthcare system in which almost 50 million have no healh insurance.

  6. 5,Tofu,I’m not criticizing our health care system. You got some legitimate beef, state it. First off your 50 million number is bunk. We’ve heard escalating numbers from the Socialized Medicine supporters for year. The Democrats want everything run through the government.

It DOES NOT WORK, Tofu. Big Government, the Nanny state does not work. How many people do you liberals have to kill to get to the point were you block headed liberals admit you are wrong???

  7. “50 million have no healh insurance.”

    50 million?

Wasn’t it 41-42 million at last count?

Doesn’t that include the 12-20 million illegal immigrants?

How about the folks on co-ops?

I’m getting tired of folks flashing these canards.

  8. The number is more like 40 million and even that number is just for healthcare plans in general. It’s a law that here in the US no one can be turned away for lack of payment. The quality of the healthcare might be at issue but not the fact that 40 million are out there with no available means.

  9. Socialized services do not work? Guess it’s time to dismantle your police, fire and EMS departments. Just think of how much lower your taxes will be!

  10. 8- Approximately 47 million without health insurance in 2005,

    http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p60-231.pdf

That would be a government stat. Since the trend has been on the increase for uninsured, in 2007, it’s a safe bet this figure is higher.

  11. 10, Tofu, this is obfuscation. Did you not note what BonBon said in #8? That makes ANY number without health insurance a MOOT POINT. They get health care. Not the same Health Car as Michael Moore and his millions for scamming fools lik you gets, but they do get health care.

  12. 11- They get emergency room healthcare. The hospital only has to stablize the patient, they do not have to treat the underlying cause of their illness without financial guarantee.

  13. So, according to the ACS, we are at 47 million, which includes the estimated 12-20 million illegal immigrants .

    47 million-18 million (an average figure)= 29 million

Now, at 5% unemployement (a standard fair, that has people entering and leaving at all time), that is 15 million.

    29 million – 15 million = 14 million

That leaves 14 million people. In that figure doesn’t include people currently on socialized health care or in medical co-ops.

As I said, this number is a canard.

  14. 12, Tofu, between Ted and I, you are not being honest. You are not arguing that people are getting no health care, but are trying to confuse people to think so. Tofu, you are not honest in any debate you join.

Lefties like you, Tofu, know that what you want, total government paid for free health care for any ailment is not affordable and is not attainable, yet you want to lie to get what you can.

  15. Ted, you’re using some fuzzy assumptions. First, employment does NOT equal having health care benefits. Second, 5% unemployment does not mean 5% of the total population. (children, elderly, disabled, illegals, etc, do not count). Lastly, do you really think illegal aliens filled out census forms? Unlikely thus their weight isn’t included in the 47 million estimate.

  16. “Ted, you’re using some fuzzy assumptions.”

I am going by the ACS and by logical conclusions.

I will concede some of the point regarding unemployment (such as children, but does include the elderly as they are may time employed). However, I did not include illegal immigrant withing the unemployment figures, as I figured them outside of that realm.

So, we should probably adjust that by about 3-4 million.

“Lastly, do you really think illegal aliens filled out census forms?”

Irrelevant, as not everyone in the US fills these the ACS. They are included with the ACS stats, as it counts population. The ACS is an estimate of population and break down.

That said, it doesn’t change the fact that the 47 million number is a canard.

  17. #12 It may not be this way where you live but in Kalifornia they get whatever they need. The Emergency Room is there when they need it (in practice, many abuse it as a clinic). There are clinics they go to when they don’t have an “emergency”. If they aren’t on Medical/Medicaid, they get referred to the “Ability to Pay” program. If it is determined they can’t pay, they pay zero. They get whatever they need and want. I can’t afford to go see a doctor for anything I can take care of myself. They go in every time they get the sniffles.

    That’s free health care.

  18. I wonder if Moore uses those free health clinics that he campaigns for. DOUBT IT!

  19. The comment about the emergency rooms only stabilizing patients is bs. If that were the case, a nurse could do triage outside the emergency rooms at the local hospital and pass out cold meds for all of the Illegals who are using it for a primary care physician. The hospital closest to my house has had to close its emergency room twice in the last 4 years for non payment. They’ve finally given up and turned it into an urgent care facility because urgent care units don’t have to provide free care.

On the topic of government run healthcare, do I really have to remind the liberals about how well the VA has been doing the past 60 years? Hell the military command structure gives commanders substantially more leeway to get things done than a standard bureaucracy and they still aren’t as good as they need to be AND that’s only serving a few million vets. What would make ANYONE think that the government can possibly administer the healthcare for over 300 million people? If the government REALLY wants to make the healthcare system work efficiently, they should hold a bid wherein insurance companies would buy groups of citizens and provide a cafeteria type insurance plan. They would then cut payroll taxes and allow the citizens to choose which of the plans to go with. A basic plan would be at no cost, a more advanced plan would have to be payed for. Of course that would require a TAX RATE CUT which we KNOW the libs will never go for.

  20. More accurate numbers from a discussion on Glen Beck.

The current figure has been recently downgraded to 45 million.

10-14 million of these are folks who are curently eligible for Medicaid/Medicare, but have not signed up.

    That leave 31 milliom.

19 million of those people who are unemployed for 4 moths or less.

    That leaves 12 million.

Many of these are healthy 20 year olds that choose NOT to have healthcare, because they don’t need it. They’d rather use the money for a nice car stereo.

Far from the claims of 50 million. At 12 million though, that 4% of the population.

  21. I would like to see what happens next time MIKIE MUTTONHEAD gose to a hospital to have a check-up:razz:
