Live Earth branded a foul-mouthed flop

The Princess Diana tribute did better than Alfest!

Live Earth has been branded a foul-mouthed flop.

Organisers of the global music concert – punctuated by swearing from presenters and performers – had predicted massive viewing figures.

But BBC’s live afternoon television coverage attracted an average British audience of just 900,000.

In the evening, when coverage switched from BBC2 to BBC1, the figure rose to just 2.7million.

And the peak audience, which came when Madonna sang at Wembley, was a dismal 4.5million. Three times as many viewers saw the Princess Diana tribute on the same channel six days before.

Two years ago, Live 8 drew a peak television audience of 9.6million while Live Aid notched 10million in 1985.

The BBC blamed the poor figures on Saturday’s good weather and said its Wimbledon tennis coverage had drawn away afternoon viewers.

Critics said however that the public had simply snubbed what they saw as a hypocritical event.

Musicians including Bob Geldof, Roger Daltrey and the Pet Shop Boys pointed out that a concert highlighting climate change had itself generated huge carbon emissions.

Performers were criticised for flying to concerts that were staged simultaneously on seven continents.

Global Warming Blamed For Low Attendance at Live Earth’s Johannesburg Concert

Yet that’s not the funniest part, as reported by Contactmusic.com Sunday (hysterical emphasis added):

Officials at Live Earth Johannesburg have blamed the effects of climate change for poor audience attendance at Saturday’s (07Jul07) South African event. Organiser John Langford believes extremely cold weather in the region – it snowed last week (ends06Jul07) for the first time in a quarter of a century – kept people away from the concert, which starred Joss Stone, UB40, Angelique Kidjo and Baaba Maal.

Imagine that. Global warming destroyed a concert to promote global warming awareness by – it really is too amazing to believe – making it snow for the first time in this part of the world in more than 25 years.

And, it snowed because the planet’s getting warmer! Is everybody following this?
What are 100,000 Trees among Friends?

The kicker comes courtesy of our friends at Sunday’s Washington Post. Matt Bellamy from the band Muse called the event “private jets for climate change.” And John Buckley of Carbon Footprint, an eco group that helps firms cut their footprint, said “We would have to plant 100,000 trees to offset the effects of Live Earth.”

  1. Did it ever occur to these pinheads that the whole thing was not only a waste of time, but a crock of crap to begin with. Maybe the world will really ignore these imbaciles and start to do real work on real problems.

  2. So now the viewer-figure of a concert is the factor that decides, if Global Warming exist or not, right?

1- What are the real problems that you refer to?

  3. Of course it was a flop- Algore was the front man promoting it. Everyone knows whether you feel man made global warming exists or not, Al Gore’s angle is for nothing more than profit.

  4. Is Live Earth’s Fizzle Beginning of the End of Global Warming Alarmism?

  5. there was some concert over the weekend???? I wasn’t even aware of it. I was working my 2nd job…

  6. Peejz…one can only hope. But then we’ll get the global cooling alarm, Again!

  7. 2, one real problem is how idiots like you survive and are not culled out of the gene pool.

  8. The only global warming I see is eminating from Al gore II’s perpetually open cake hole, and Algore III’s exhaust pipe as he speeds down the freeway with his car load O’ dope.

  14. come on…..HE CARES!!!!

isn’t that really what’s important to liberals??? not really doing anything about anything, just caring about it (and making sure everyone knows how much you care about it).

  15. #4 Peejz has a link to a really good article. Bingo! Just what we have been saying about the Global Warming fad.

  16. Perhaps for the attention-span-limited public, Global Warming is fading from their interest. You know, Global Warming, it’s sooo 2006!

  22. The top ticket was $348.
Where was all that money going to go? Now, that’s the big question. Live Earth is not a registered charity in and of itself. Any money they made on Saturday, possibly as much as $6 million, is being collected by a group called the Alliance for Climate Protection.

The Alliance is only supposed to stay in business for three years, and use the money to make commercials and disseminate as much information as possible on climate change and global warming. Some of the money will go to preexisting climate groups. This should be interesting. Among the members of the Board of Directors is former Ford and Bush administration National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft. There is also Teddy Roosevelt IV, a managing director of Lehman Brothers.

Insiders say the big question will be how much of a fee Kevin Wall, the producer of Live Earth, takes from the profits. But that information won’t be known until all the accounting is done and the Alliance files its first tax return as an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

“They’re going to have [to] make a case and compete for funds,” a source said. “There’s a lot of politics among them, like who was here first.”
