DENVER – A professor who was fired after comparing some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi sued the school Wednesday, saying officials retaliated against him for exercising his right to free speech.
Ward Churchill was ousted by the University of Colorado’s governing Board of Regents after three faculty committees accused him of plagiarism, fabrication and other research misconduct.
Churchill, a tenured professor of ethnic studies, had triggered a national outcry with an essay comparing some World Trade Center victims to Holocaust organizer Adolf Eichmann.
The Regents said his dismissal was based on other writings and that his firing was unrelated to his Sept. 11 comments. The academic investigation did not include the Sept. 11 essay but began after university officials concluded it was protected by the First Amendment and that he could not be fired for writing it.
Churchill has denied the research misconduct allegations and called the investigation “a farce” and “a fraud.” His lawsuit, filed in Denver District Court, charged that after the essay came to light, “the university vowed to examine every word ever written or spoken by Professor Churchill in an effort to find some excuse for terminating his employment.”
University spokesman Ken McConnellogue said the school stands behind the Regents’ vote to fire Churchill. “We believe this is a matter of academic integrity for the university, so we will not be settling the lawsuit,” he said.
Ward Churchill was fired for his actions; Churchill falsified or plagiarized some of his research, not his words; Churchill refered to some 9/11 victims as “little Eichmann’s”.
Churchill deserved to be fired not because of his hatred of 9/11 victims, but for his plagarism and fraud.
I agree, some may not like what the Professor had to say,but this is SUPPOSE to be America, where EVERYONE is Constitutionally entitled to “Free Political speech”.

Please compare the media’s coverage of Christian DeJohn’s free speech case at Temple University (you can Google Christian DeJohn or Sergeant Christian DeJohn) with their coverage of Churchill. If you’re a far left, long-haired wacvko like Churnchill, the ivory tower and sympathetic media rushes to your defense…but if you’re a decorated, disabled veteran who exercises your First Amendment rights at Temple University, you find yourself placed in acamdeic, professional, and personal limbo, and the subject of a character assasination campaign by the lefty media…have you read about this case lately? Obviously, you have no concept of what consists of free speech. I doubt if you come back, but if you do then I will gladly discuss what you are missing, such as plagerism is NOT covered under free speech and the consequnces of exerting said right.

Ward Churchill wasn’t fired for his idiotic political commentary. He was fired for academic dishonesty. The man has a history of fabricating “facts” to promote himself. He has claimined to be a “Native American”. Truth is both tribes he tried to claim as his lineage have denied his having any ancestry in them. He’s less “Native American” than I am, and I’m a blue eyed, blonde. My adopted dad was supposedly 1/4 Cherokee and had the looks to prove it.
