WaPo Again LIES About Local Police Feeling Ammo Pinch From War

By: Pam On: Aug/28/07 - 8 Comments

The WaPo, rehashing the AP’s story of last week, has their story out today, but obviously, due to the war, they are short on fact checkers. Confederate Yankee has been all over this story and did a bit of fact checking.

WaPo:

The U.S. military’s soaring demand for small-arms ammunition, fueled by two wars abroad, has left domestic police agencies less able to quickly replenish their supplies, leading some to conserve rounds by cutting back on weapons training, police officials said.
To varying degrees, officials in Montgomery, Loudoun and Anne Arundel counties said, they have begun rationing or making other adjustments to accommodate delivery schedules that have changed markedly since the military campaigns began in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Confederate Yankee:

ATK’s Ammunition Systems Group is the largest ammunition manufacturing body in the world. ATK runs the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant under contract, where it has the capacity to manufacture 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition a year, or put another way, a half billion rounds per year more than is being used by our military in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is also a major supplier of law enforcement ammunition under Federal Premium, Speer Gold Dot, Lawman, and CCI Blazer brands. The law enforcement ammunition is made in plants in Idaho and Minnesota that are completely separate for their military operations at Lake City. These production lines do not, as the AP falsely states, use the same equipment used to manufacture military ammunition.

Seems simple enough and no need for confusion. 2 different production operations.

Since 9/11 we’ve seen a huge jump in demand from law enforcement. In the last fiscal year alone we saw demand from law enforcement jump 40%. By running our civil plants 24/7, hiring hundreds of new employees and streamlining our manufacturing processes we were able to increase our deliveries to law enforcement by 30% in that same period. In addition, we’ve just announced we’ll be investing another $5 million in new production lines at our civil ammunition facilities.

40% is a huge increase for any manufacturing plant!

Great work Confederate Yankee.

Liberals lie! Get that fact straight.

Wa. Post is a liberal paper run by liberals who don’t fact check stories that appeal to liberal “sensibilities”. Remember, this is the paper who had to give back a Pulitzer Prize because one of their reporters fabricated an article repeating all the liberal dogmas about how bad the Reagan Admin. was hurting the poor on Welfare.

Goshm, you’d think the Compost could have just asked someone in LE if any of that was true. Nah, that’s too much work. Besides, it sounds better that in yet another way, another facet of American society, Bush’s WOT has hurt us.

That sounds so much better, so that’s what they went with. Never mind the truth…

Where are all the bullets going for law enforcement? Doesn’t that seem like an awful big increase? If they need it, so be it, but a 40% increase seems like they either had too little and needed to adjust inventories, or they are not stock piling.

4, this story is a mess. I don’t know if the Military uses .38 Special or .40 caliber ammo, and not sure many cops use the .38 Specials anymore. Maybe rent-a-cops do, but not street cops. They use either 9mm or .40 Cal. I don’t know of many PDs issuing .45 ACP, and the military is moving away from the .45 ACP (M1911 Colts).

    from CF:

And of course, Rondeaux was wrong when she said that the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge used by the military are “223-caliber rounds — the same round fired by the military’s M-16 and M-4 assault rifles.”

Of course, had she bothered to contact ammunition companies in this story about ammunition, she might have figured a few of these things out before she went to print.

The WAPO, and even more so the idiot so-called “Journalist” who wrote that story, have been outed as incompetent utter fools at best, and degenerate proagandists at worst.

Why does anyone read that rag (WAPO)? it wouldn’t even make good toilet paper!
