Poll: 55% Oppose Gay Marriage. More Support A Muslim Over An Atheist
Hmm..

Attitudes toward gay marriage have remained virtually unchanged since July 2006, with 36% of Americans favoring it and 55% expressing opposition to allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally.

While 25% of Americans say they would be less likely to vote for a Mormon for president, 45% express reluctance about voting for a Muslim and 61% say they would be less likely to support a candidate who does not believe in God.

Awesome…things are getting better for the gay community every year.
I wonder if anyone would care to post what the poll numbers where concerning gay marriage 5, even 10 years ago.
They are gaining support!!
It’s only a matter of time before this goes all the way…I say give it another 10 years give or take a few, and America will have Gay Marriage.

1.
Hold on. First you say:
“Awesome:things are getting better for the gay community every year”
Then you follow it with:
“I wonder if anyone would care to post what the poll numbers where concerning gay marriage 5, even 10 years ago.”
How can you make the claim in sentence #1 if you don’t know the facts in #2 to support it?
September 7, 2007 - 04:39 PM on September 7th, 2007
I asked to have the poll numbers shown to demonstrate for you RV folks how the opposition to gay marriage is losing ground.
Obviously, I know the answer Ted, or I wouldn’t have asked that it be shown.
Things are indeed getting better for the gay rights community. Americans are becoming more open to the idea that gay couples love each other just as much as straight couples and should have the exact same rights and benefits that come with such relationships.

From a quick google search, i found this:
“Public acceptance of homosexuality has increased in a number of ways in recent years, though it remains a deeply divisive issue. Half of Americans (51%) continue to oppose legalizing gay marriage, but this number has declined significantly from 63% in February 2004, when opposition spiked following the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision and remained high throughout the 2004 election season. Opposition to gay marriage has fallen across the board, with substantial declines even among Republicans.”

(Peejz, where is the link button that used to be there?)
And Ted, this is from last year.
I’m sure if you dig a bit deeper you can find supporting evidence for my assertion.

SF- it was 51% in March 2006 and 55% in 2007..that means more oppose it….Now, in 2004 there was a spike due to MA, but as states have enacted their bans, people are less worried about it. So, other than liberals, the majority, including many democrats oppose it.
September 8, 2007 - 10:31 AM on September 8th, 2007
well stated SFL
Beyond that I wonder what the polls would have said about black Americans sharing the same civil rights as white ones in Tennessee in 1930?
Hmm… not that’s a toughie.
Sky didn’t fall there either.

#5 SFL writes:
” Americans are becoming more open to the idea that gay couples love each other just as much as straight couples ..”
probably more since we’ve had to join forces so diligently to congeal our energies to not be marginalized by extremists who’d seek to relegate us to second class citizenship all the while taking our money to pay for their bastard children.
Think about it.

the ‘majority’ opposed integration in Selma in 1964 too you forget.
No vote there. The collective American intelligence when tested unfortunately cannot often be relied upon to make a decision separate from its own innate prejudice.

Yeah, Peejz.
The point is, acceptance is growing.
ten, twenty years ago what would the numbers have been compared to now?
the civil rights movement that grew over decades, just like the gay rights movement is doing.
You people are on the wrong side of history with this issue.

September 8, 2007 - 01:13 PM on September 8th, 2007
Pretty bad for you atheists. Americans would support a Muslim over an Atheist. Given what is happening right now, that’s pretty low.
That puts atheists at the very bottom of the barrel.

PCD “You two boobs, SFL and Eben, are doing more right now with your in your face gloating to hurt your cause than anything else right now.”
Not much of a ‘boob’ man here. And I have no cause other than human rights. Although I’d love to see you whine and pull a hissy fit if someone attempted to deconstruct yours babydoll.

September 9, 2007 - 12:50 PM on September 9th, 2007
“-15 Who brought atheists into the discussion?”
Uh, the person who created the topic…
Hey, I just thought up a new term: gaytheists.
Because the two seem to go together…
September 9, 2007 - 12:51 PM on September 9th, 2007
Or maybe should be spelled “gatheists”. That’s better.
September 9, 2007 - 01:46 PM on September 9th, 2007
It’s gettin’ better (for liberals) all the time!
Slowly but surely, we are marching away from conservatism…civil rights, gay rights, and soon, TRUE religous freedom…

Are you really so stupid Robert that you’d think gay people are, as a matter of course atheists? Even you’d have to know how preposterous that is.. or does it fuck with your reality of how to perceive us if you include us as believing in God?
Why is this board so consumed with anti-gay polls and anti-gay marriage threads? Is inherently something Republican and right-wing to be obtuse?
September 11, 2007 - 07:23 PM on September 11th, 2007
#18 oh sweetcheeks I can read…
It’s just that so many of your threads are biased rhetoric I tend to skim.
You’ll understand dipshit yes?
September 11, 2007 - 08:07 PM on September 11th, 2007
23-Obviously you can’t read dumbass…
22- no more preposterous than you thinking that blacks would accept you as a gay person cause they are black and according to you, you both have shared the same struggle, which really isn’t true, but in your simple little mind it is.
September 11, 2007 - 08:08 PM on September 11th, 2007
I think it is pretty obvious that most homosexuals are atheists.
September 11, 2007 - 10:25 PM on September 11th, 2007
SFL,
No, I was merely asking that you provide evidence for your claims, otherwise the claims you make are baseless. The assertions was made by you, so the burden of proof to support the assertion is yours, and not mine.
As for gay “marriage”, I support it. However, I also feel that the religious institution of “marriage” and the state institution of “union” need to be completely separated before it can be institutionalized.
As for “gay rights” being a civil rights issue- it is not in any way shape or form as homosexuality is a choice.
Re 25:
No, homosexuals are not all atheist- many follow the word of God as best they can. Just because a person sins, does not make them atheist. it is like saying it is obvious that adulters are atheist, when they are not.
September 12, 2007 - 05:47 AM on September 12th, 2007
16, Eben, you and other deviants are so obsessed with being declared normal that you drive away many that would support your cause IF YOU WERE REASONABLE. You aren’t, and haven’t been.
September 12, 2007 - 07:47 AM on September 12th, 2007
#26 I posted “most”, not all. Most as in a majority. I don’t know if any study has been done; I am guessing. But I guess that way because homosexuals tend to be alienated from “normal” things.

You republican fktards are so repulsive..You’re fascist ,hypocrite pigs of the worst kind. Your asshole president and crooked g.o.p. politics have phucked this country …$10 TRILLION in debt, failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, more pollution, crumbling infrastructure, an economy in default. The gop/republican phuck tards have ruined America and their divisive politics/policies have reduced America to the biggest debtor nation in the world..Additionally the US has few allies after the Bushies disastrous misguided attempts at regime change..NO ONE believes his 900+ LIES….NO credibiltiy ..I was supportive of some so-called republican values, but they’re value less now…
January 29, 2008 - 06:26 PM on January 29th, 2008
News flash Tim, we aren’t looking to cozy with the enemy, other than them, our allies are with us..It would take someone of intelligence to understand that though.
