Texas Student Booted From School for Wearing John Edwards T-Shirt

By: Pam On: Oct/3/07 - 12 Comments

A Texas high school sophomore’s parents might sue after the school booted the student from campus for wearing a John Edwards for 2008 president T-shirt.

Pete Palmer, a sophomore at Waxahachie High School, says he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong wearing the political shirt to school.

But according to the Waxahachie Independent School District dress code, students can’t wear shirts with political slogans.

“T-shirts, other than WISD clubs, organizations, sports, or spirit t-shirts, college or university t-shirts or solid-colored t-shirts, are prohibited,” according to the policy.

Palmer’s parents argue the policy is inhibiting free speech.

“It’s a First Amendment constitutional right that people have fought and died for and I don’t know why he should give it up just because Waxahachie thinks it would be okay or neat for him to do so,” Paul Palmer said.

School officials cite the dress code policy and disagree that it is an attempt to stifle free speech.

Free speech does not apply in public schools.

At first glance I would be tempted to say who cares, let the (dopey-looking) kid proclaim his idiocy by wearing the T-shirt.

But anything that is distracting or disruptive should properly be excluded in schools. So the suit should be dismissed, and the kid should reconsider his support for the phony elitist hypocrite.

Well..if the school policy says only solid colored t-shirts outside of what was already mentioned this is just a clear cut incident of breaking the dress code.

ALL school’s have dress codes and if these parents EVER attended one single PTO meeting they would be very aware of it and if they didn’t agree a PTO meeting would be a great place to mention this and ASK for a change to be made.

These moron parents don’t seem to get it. Edwards doesn’t want their support. They’re from fly over country.

Could these parents send him to school with a shirt saying; “My Parents are Media Attention Seeking Morons”

    Would that be okay?
