This is the Soros way of influencing policy! Welcome to George Soros’s America.

Internet giant Google has banned advertisements critical of MoveOn.org, the far-left advocacy group that caused a national uproar last month when it received preferential treatment from The New York Times for its “General Betray Us” message.

The ads banned by Google were placed by a firm working for Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ re-election campaign. Collins is seeking her third term.

Earlier this week, Google told Lance Dutson, president of Maine Coast Designs, that the ads he placed for Collins had been removed and would not be allowed to resume because they violated Google’s trademark policy.

Google’s Web site states, “Google takes allegations of trademark infringement very seriously and, as a courtesy, we’re happy to investigate matters raised by trademark owners.” That suggests Google acted in response to a complaint by MoveOn.org.

    5. So “Shutup.org” somehow violates Moveon.org’s copyright? What bullshit!

    6. Actually Robert, I did a post about a week ago, and Cafe Press was being sued in order to get them to take down anything derogatory against MoveOn.

    8. …and yet if you argue about this type of suppression with a liberal they will deny it and proceed to tell you that it is an isolated case…until the next time. :-w

    9. 8, BonBon, ain’t that the truth. It is a Lib’s way of dismissing something they know is true and don’t have a good lie to counter with. (Do you SFL?)

    10. Okay, you are all disappointing me very much! Where are the points I expected you to make about

    11. 10, Pam, it is the futility of dealing with a liberal run company. No one takes responsibility for decisions, but will steadfastly hold to their bad decision no matter how hypocritical you prove them to be. In this case, Google running MoveOn’s ads critical of others, but not running ads critical of MoveOn, its positions, or of Hillary.

    13. Once again a Liberal-run organization has no problems with double-standards. Hypocrisy and double-standards are stock in trade for the Left; Free speech for their side but repression and fascism for anyone else.

    14. Well, I for one have almost accepted the fact that whenever a political ad, etc. is critical of any left leaning politician it’s going to try to be stopped. Having said that I also believe that if it’s kept out there in the open, i.e., exposing it for what it is, eventually it will come to pass that it will help republicans.

Most Americans, even registered democrats, believe in free speech. Aside from the handful of idiots who WANT suppressed speech for all but themselves, people see through their ruse.

    15. Okay, you are back in my good graces :)

    16. hmmmmmmm….try again. #:-s<:-p

    19. You know I read some more of these links. Trademark infringement? Are we kidding here? If that’s the case then can you imagine shows like Saturday Night Live that routinely ‘substitutes’ like sounding phrases, etc. into their skits? Wasn’t Al Franken guilty of some of that?

Okay, so here’s my idea for a website. UpYoursLibbies.org

    20. Trademark in Ad content. What’s so hard to understand?

I just searched for “moveon.org” at Google. I see an add for a Susan Collin’s supporter website (aspreviouslyimplied.blogspot.com) on the right. Note the ad doesn’t have the trademark “MoveOn.org” in it.

    21. 20, because using the standard you and MoveOn are using in this instance, MoveOn regularly violates that standard.

What’s so hard to understand about wanting a real level playing field, Tofu? Or is fair, level, and honest for non-liberals, too fair for you?

    22. 22- Actually, trademark attorneys have weighed in and don’t see it your way! The LA Times pointed this out:

“Trademark law doesn’t confer monopoly rights over all uses of a registered phrase or symbol, however, and it wasn’t created simply to protect the trademark owner’s interests. Instead, it’s designed to protect consumers against being misled or confused about brands. The courts have repeatedly ruled in favor of parodies and critiques; that’s why http://www.famousbrandnamesucks.com doesn’t violate famousbrandname’s trademark. And most, if not all, of the items targeted by MoveOn were clearly designed to razz it, not to trick buyers into thinking they were the group’s products.”

    23. 21- I’m using the standard Google uses for all Ads when it comes to trademarks. Try making a Google Ad with title text “Stop the NRA.org!” followed by “Guns kill children… “blah blah… and see how far you get.

Google’s policy on trademarks is fair. And this thread is only about Google’s Ad acceptance standards and all I am commenting on– and not anything MoveOn does.

    24. 24- Yes Pam, and I agree with them. But Google has it’s policy and as long as it’s enforced equally, then it’s their right to stick with that policy.

    25. Is it being enforced equally? And there isn’t anything being infringed upon, well except for the first amendment, but I guess it’s only important when you want to use it?

    26. TT- I am going to get with Jay at Stop The ACLU and see if he has ever placed any ads. That should give us both a good idea.

    27. TT,

Can I privately e-mail you the response?

    28. 29- Sure thing.

    29. BTW, just to test, I searched ‘moveon’ on yahoo and I get one add “Stop MOVEON.org” (www.move-over.org). I search “ACLU” on yahoo and I get a whole column of ads with “aclu” in the ad titles. I search ACLU on Google, and get no ads. Tried “McDonalds” on both sites. No ads on Google, bunch of Ads on Yahoo.

Clearly Yahoo doesn’t have the same trademark policy as Google.

    34. My take on it is that Google is a private business and can allow or disallow any advertising they want.

I’m no lawyer, but I pretty sure that’s perfectly legal.

    35. MoveOn.org is a wealthy organization, and thus has a strong legal arm that it apparently likes to flex.

Again, I see little problem with this, as long as the courts keep a check on MoveOns legal claims.

If they are legitimate, the courts will recognize them. If not, the courts will toss them out.

      Pretty simple stuff here.
