Who Would’ve Thunk The NFL Would Outsource Games

By: Pam On: Oct/28/07 - 17 Comments

Today, the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins played to a sold out crowd at Wembley Stadium in London.

“I don’t think you can be meaningful forever if you’re not part of the global community, particularly in this day and age,” Waller said.

If the game goes well ” meaning, mostly, that owners of the league’s 32 teams see that it can cause a happy ruckus in London without the trip feeling foreign to the teams involved ” the N.F.L. will likely play two overseas games each of the next four seasons, as part of a resolution already approved by owners.

Waller, who leads the league’s international operations, would like each N.F.L. team to play a game on foreign soil every season beginning in five years. His goal is for a team to be based on a different continent by 2020. And he foresees future Super Bowls being played in overseas stadiums, perhaps Wembley, a possibility floated again by Commissioner Roger Goodell last week.

With that statement in mind, I want to share with you a CNN Money article from one year ago, please read it in it’s entirety, but here is a bit:

The National Football League is probably the most lucrative sports league the world has ever known. As a portfolio manager, it might be even better.

The league has long been great at raking in billions of dollars from deep pocketed partners such as General Electric (Charts), Walt Disney (Charts) and Motorola (Charts). Recently it has learned how to maximize value from smaller business partners by taking stock or warrants instead of just cash.

The league then shares in the lift the smaller companies get from their relationship with the nation’s most popular sport.

Here is a list of profites from 2004:

How much revenue was lost because the NFL sent the Giants and the Dolphins to England? How much revenue will be lost in one of our cities when the NFL does decide to play the Superbowl overseas? Somehow, I never thought I would see the day when we outsource our NFL games.

What are your thoughts?

Well, how about we let the NFL know what we think of their plans. With ticket prices for some games going for over $200 minimum, exactly how hard would it be to simply spend our money elsewhere? I think the Superbowl thing is simply a threat to try and get future host cities to cough up more incentives. Maybe the NFL needs to be told exactly how much gate revenue their going to lose when the US fans who might shell out $1000 for a Superbowl ticket tell them “No Thanks” when that thousand dollar ticket also costs over $2000 in air fare and overseas hotels and a passport to get to. A move like that would cut gate receipts by 50%. A lot of the Superbowl activities are run by volunteers. Exactly how many volunteers for a US Football game are they going to get in a foreign country where they don’t even have a team? Other than Toronto, I can’t imagine very many. For that matter, who wants to attend a SuperBowl in Toronto in February? Unless they have a domed stadium, it’d be like playing in Pittsburgh, Green Bay, or Denver where the weather is horrific that time of year.

I quit going to any games when the ticket prices went over $51.00.

I quit caring about baseball after that strike years ago.

    I never cared about basketball.

I grew up in Green Bay. I know the economic impact of just sharing half the schedule with Milwaukee. I don’t like this one bit.

Oh…uh…youch…if they do this, if the AMERICAN Super Bowl is played anywhere except in America, our love affair is OVER!!! I cannot believe this. When they first started with this pre-season game in Japan, I got really upset. I was told I was being silly. OH YEAH? /:) I feel a cuss word coming up from the bowels of my heart…thanks for the heads-up.

PS. I am no longer at http://rosemarysthoughts.com/ . I am back to where I started, http://rosemarysthoughts.blogspot.com/ . I am leaving my URL on the top of my messages. It’s a bummer, but I’m not getting very many trackbacks at all because I moved back. Oh well. Still working on it…btw, I left you a trackback, but it isn’t showing. Please let me know if you continue to have this problem. Thanks. :-?
