It appears that Gates has no intention of playing Reid’s game:
The military plans to furlough civilian employees and cut all Army and Marine Corps bases to bare-bones operations early next year because of a funding impasse with Congress, according to a memo provided to Politico.
Democratic leaders accused the Bush administration of using scare tactics, and said they will not be strong-armed into giving the White House a blank check on the war:
The plan would leave “bases : all but shut down, only able to provide the most basic safety and security measures for those who reside there,” Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said at a briefing Tuesday afternoon.
“The most immediate impact will be felt next month, just before Christmas, in fact, when we’ll begin notifying roughly 200,000 civilians and contractors that we can no longer afford their services; and that, absent additional funding, they will be furloughed, or temporarily laid off, within a matter of weeks,” Morrell said.
“It is imperative that lawmakers reconsider this matter as soon as possible and send the president supplemental funding legislation, free from objectionable policy provisions, in order to insure that we can continue to support our troops and their families, as well as protect our nation’s security.”
Note how Democrats makes sure they get their pay, but when it comes to the military, they spit in their eye!

This is just as I predicted, except a bit earlier.
I said that if by spring the Petraues Plan was still working I was looking for the Dems to flat out attempt to defund the war, forcing a loss, in hopes of saving the presidency and grabbing power.
Looks like it began earlier than expected.

Hey Robert, NOW is the time for the RNC to step up and point out to all of the members of the labor unions how the DEMS are leaving their government employee union members swinging in the breeze just before Christmas. Let them know who is cutting their throats and leaving them high and dry during the coldest months of winter. Keep reminding them about how their Dem pals are taking such good care of them all the way from now through Super Tuesday and on up until November. Point out to all of the people living near military bases how the Dems are slitting their throats by putting their neighbors out of work for the purpose of political gain. The Dems are claiming we’re in a recession and are doing everything they can to produce one. Point out how when their now unemployed, for political expedience, neighbors losing their homes will negatively impact the value of theirs. Show everyone in BIG RED LETTERS how the Dems will screw anyone and everyone solely for the purpose of regaining control of the White House, no matter how many people suffer as a result.
I’m perfectly willing to allow every idiot who believes that global warming to revert to living in a pre industrial revolution society. Note, I didn’t say that I was going to. However if you look at the loudest voices in the argument, they are not even living as ecologically sound a lifestyle as the average person and are pretending to offset their excesses through buying bogus carbon credits from themselves.
