By millions. I am relieved that the epidemic is not at the levels we were led to believe. I am angered that the UN is even involved in this. Yet again, they prove that they are a non-functioning body.
The United Nations’ top AIDS scientists plan to acknowledge this week that they have long overestimated both the size and the course of the epidemic, which they now believe has been slowing for nearly a decade, according to U.N. documents prepared for the announcement.
I am glad to see it is slowing, but we must still do everything possible to stop this disease!

It is all about the Benjamins. Reported the Post: “Over the past decade, global spending on AIDS has grown by a factor of 30, reaching as much as $10 billion a year.”
Far more deadly is malaria. And lung cancer. Odd that we tax the hell out of smokers, yet provide less research money on lung cancer than say breast or prostate cancer, which have survival rates of 90% and 99% respectively in the USA.
Lung cancer? Less than 20%.
Former WHO AIDS expert James Chin thinks the numbers are still too high. He said 33 million puts the UN in the ballpark, but that his research indicates that the actual number of cases is no more than 25 million. That means that the UN overshot the entire epidemic by almost 40%. They wouldn’t be retracting the 40 million if it hadn’t been for Chin and other researchers like him, who saw the exaggerations for what they were — a mechanism of guilt to force Western nations to pony up more money for UNAIDS.
This kind of scientific work casts new doubt on other issues that the UN champions as well. Their panel on global warming will publish a new position, insisting that the situation is critical and that nations need to act now in economically-crippling ways to curtail emissions.

With today’s Democrites in control of Congress and HilLiary in the White House, the above is a plausible scenario.

Yes it would be better to not assess new data and update numbers. Never admit a mistake and go on with made up data. This is the best alternative every time. Can anyone grasp that research and investigation by definition means changing data fields. BTW, what do you suppose is the causation of the downward trend? Be careful as to how you answer, because the data points to some very interesting hypothesis.

I would just like to remind you that the UN World Health Organization (the same agency you are poo pooing here) successfully eradicated smallpox and is on the verge of eradicating polio. The agency does work.

Are you really that ignorant John Ryan? We are thankful that the numbers were wrong. The entire point was that once again, the UN proves to be a worthless and corrupt organization. And they expect us to listen to them? I don’t think so..cut the funding now!
The UN is virtually worthless unless you like tossing US tax payer dollars into a pit of corruption and greed. The AIDs “researchers” were simply looking for a way to drag out their studies to insure that they continue collecting grant checks. You really want to know how to stop the spread of AIDs? Stop providing treatment. When they become obviously infected, they will no longer be able to be sexually active and hence spread the disease. Once it becomes painfully obvious that wanton sexual behavior can be a death sentence, it will grind to a halt. It might grind slowly, but it will do so. If you want to increase the rate of decline, tattoo “INFECTED” across their foreheads in the appropriate language. It will reduce the number of potential partners (and hence new infectees)dramatically. Yes, I acknowledge that my comments are extremely harsh. But they are no more harsh than allowing hundreds of thousands of aids infected children to be born into a short, brutish life of nothing but hunger, pain and death annually.
As for the UN, it’s a joke. By their own numbers, global warming is little more than a farce. And yet, tens of billions of US Taxpayer dollars will be tossed into researching something we have no control over instead of developing more energy sources (conventional and otherwise) to meet the rising demands of the growing world.
