Hurricaine Hugo Watch
Venezuela is bracing for what could be the most catastrophic event in their future…Hurricaine Hugo…will the people give him the dictatorship he wants, or will they call for government reforms in a free and democratic society?
The world is watching their elections. Hugo has already theatened to cut off oil supplies to the US if we involve ourselves in their election. That is just so stupid on so may levels, but Ed reminds us that “PDVSA (Venezuela’s state-owned oil company) bought Citgo years ago specifically for its capacity to refine the low-grade crude PDVSA produces. In effect, Hugo sells his crude to himself, mainly because few other refiners can handle his product. If he cuts off the US, he’s cutting off Citgo, and there may be few markets left for Venezuelan crude outside of his own subsidiary. Hugo may enjoy cutting off his nose to spite his face, but Venezuelans may not care to follow suit and dive into poverty.”
Uncle Fidel is warning Hugo about our assassination attempts. That is so 1960’s and Hugo is just not worth the trouble.
Michelle will also be watching this as the events of the weekend unfold. She linked to this press release that is a must read:
Hugo Chávez and I worked together for many years. I supported him through thick and thin, serving as his defense minister. But now, having recently retired, I find myself with the moral and ethical obligation as a citizen to express my opposition to the changes to the Constitution that President Chávez and the National Assembly have presented for approval by the voters tomorrow.
The proposal, which would abolish presidential term limits and expand presidential powers, is nothing less than an attempt to establish a socialist state in Venezuela. As our Catholic bishops have already made clear, a socialist state is contrary to the beliefs of Simón BolÃvar, the South American liberation hero, and it is also contrary to human nature and the Christian view of society, because it grants the state absolute control over the people it governs.
Venezuelan society faces a broad array of problems that have not been addressed in the eight years Mr. Chávez has been in office, even though the present Constitution offers ample room for any decent, honest government to do so. Inflation, threats to personal safety, a scarcity of basic supplies, a housing shortage and dismal education and health care are problems that will not be resolved by approving this so-called reform.
