Your Thoughts On Mormons
I polled my family for their thoughts on Mormons. We are Catholics. All thought that Mormons are Christians and none had ever been taught differently in their religious teachings. (BTW: None had ever been taught negatives about any other religion)
There is much ado about Romney and his Mormonism. I just can’t bring myself to get too excited about it. What are your thoughts on this? Would his religion be a big determining factor in voting for Mitt?

I really don’t have a problem with non-missionary Mormons. I went to school at the Univ. of Idaho with some. They were the biggest drunks this side of Ted Kennedy.

I have no problem with Romney’s being a Mormon. We came to this country in part to be allowed to practice our religion. Mormons are Christians and no Christian in this day and age preaches hate.
Now, Barack Obama was raised a Muslim. His father is Muslim and in the Islamic meaning of the Koran if your father is a Muslim you are always a muslim.
Then he supposedly shed his muslim faith but ended up in a racist, separationist, church. I have many more problems and questions about that.
So where is the msm on this one? I haven’t heard a word and particularly upsetting is that nothing has come fromt he GOP either.
December 12, 2007 - 09:34 AM on December 12th, 2007
2, BonBon, I don’t think the GOP candidates need to waste time on nailing Obama right now. We need to sort out our own candidates.
I and my liberal wife were talking, and we are not happy with the way candidates just leave open what they stand for and will do, hoping that the voter will be duped into thinking the candidate will do what each individual voter wants.
December 12, 2007 - 10:40 AM on December 12th, 2007
Perhaps you’re right PCD. I do not like attack ads. I would much rather see an ad about the candidate, his goals and his beliefs. But with all the brouhaha over Mitts being a Mormon in this post 9/11 world I have to stop and say to myself this is all backwards. We should be questioning Obama’s faith and background with some serious thought to what it would open America up to by having a muslim as president. I agree he’s a personable guy but that’s not enough.
As for the Gop candidates I am not a big Romney supporter. I like them all but lean towards Giuliano, Thompson, McCain and Huckaby. I’m waiting for more debates to narrow my choice but I would support any of them if they won the nomination including Romney.
My mostly liberal husband refuses to tell me who he supports admitting the dems have a poor lineup so he just laughs and says he likes UFO’s so he’ll support Kucinich! Funny guy

4, I’d like to see them all locked in a room. Questions and answers televised. No campaign plants or MSM biased moderators. Also, I’d like them hooked up to lie detecters. Brand the liars to their faces, and corner them all on the particulars of their agendas.

I generally like Mormons and respect them. I have worked with and known many; I admire their self-reliance and focus on family and community values.
That being said, there is one troubling reality that prevents me from giving them an unqualified endorsement: it seems that a disproportionately high number of scammers, con men, and bullshit artists originate from Utah. Many of the MLM schemes/scams (ScamWay, Quixtscam, etc.) are run by Mormons. A very high percentage of the late night infomercial get-rich-quick bullshit scams are from Utah. Going right down the list it seems a preponderence of them originate in Utah.
Certainly Mormons are not perfect, and there are bad apples in very barrel. But why (and my observation is not scientific, just an observation) does it seem like the majority of the scams come form Utah/Mormons?
December 12, 2007 - 12:10 PM on December 12th, 2007
That may be true Robert but Romney is one of the founders of Staples, a perfectly legitimate business and to include him in that group would be unfair.
I think what would be better is to put it into perspective. How many Mormons versus other Christian denominations in this country and use the percentages from each for scams. Am I making sense here? Hope so. Mormons are not a very large group therefore a few bad apples does make the whole bunch look bad.

6,7, Remember, there were a number of Mormons in Howard Hughes inner circle helping to keep him isolated and fed his mental illness.
Oh, The pope is blasting the Algore crowd.

Robert, I can give you a quick answer to that question. It deals with two things Utah Mormons are long on. Trust and Money. If you’re going to set up a scam, do you set it up where the local people distrust everyone and are broke? or do you set it up in an area where the local populace tends to trust everyone and has money? If you set it up where the local populace is trusting, has money, and nationwide connections, it’s very easy for the first few people to make big money on the MLM which encourages everyone else to try harder. Then they can use their nationwide connections to spread it out. Once you get the net spread wide enough, the people at the top are making fortunes while the people at the bottom aren’t making beans.

Point well taken. My thought was completely unscientific; just an observation.

I knew a Lady Footlocker manager who told me that she had never received as many bad checks as she did when she managed a store in Salt Lake City.
Of course there is one other thing to consider. Look at the rampant level of corruption and theft in the “fundamentalist” LDS group in the Hilldale, UT and Colorado City, AZ enclave. This is the group that still believes in polygamy. Fraud and theft were rampant. While they were kicked out of the Mormon’s over a century ago, this group is absolutely crooked to the core. The vast majority of the church and city elders should be indicted including the entire police forces.
December 14, 2007 - 12:12 AM on December 14th, 2007
Fundamentalist Christians are some of the most INtolerant Americans out there.
Who are the ones who are really making a fuss about Romneys Mormon religion?
The Fundies.
My mom is a perfect example. She is 100% born-again midwest conservative republican.
Won’t vote for a Mormon because she thinks its a cult, and is not “true” christianity.
Me? The Liberal? I couldn’t give a shit what somebody believes in or doesn’t, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the job they were elected to do.
December 14, 2007 - 12:14 AM on December 14th, 2007
Incidentaly, I met Romneys father – the ex Michigan governor – back in the early 90’s when he spoke at my high school.
He was a nice man.
That was back in my Rush Limbaugh dittohead days…
>shudder

How very brave of you, BonBon, to show us all how intolerant you are of other peoples religions, that are different from your own.

“Fundamentalist Christians are some of the most INtolerant Americans out there.”
Could they possibly be nearly as intolerant as the Politically-correct crowd?
“How very brave of you, BonBon, to show us all how intolerant you are of other peoples religions, that are different from your own.”
Until non-terrorist Muslims collectively stand up loudly and in unison condemn the radicals and take concrete action to join the civilized world in fighting terrorism, BonBon’s observations are valid.
I would not vote for a Muslim for President because they are Muslim. Because I have no confidence that their being a Muslim will NOT interfere with their ability to do the job.

SFL is one of the most INTOLERANT people posting here followed by Tofu and Mattias.
December 14, 2007 - 08:40 AM on December 14th, 2007
SFL…does your mother feel that way about the Amish, Quakers or Scientologists? The Mormon faith is not a cult although I could argue Scientology is but not Amish or Quakers.
As for Obama. I believe that a person running for president should be judged on many things, one of them being his background. Using pot is not too bad but cocaine and crack? They are very addicting drugs and I have a problem with that. As for being a Muslim, yes, absolutely, after 9/11 and through all my research I think America would be very wise to use caution when electing politicians, especially a President, who have muslim backgrounds.
December 14, 2007 - 08:42 AM on December 14th, 2007
PCD…you know tolerance is a funny thing. People who constantly tell others they are not being tolerant are usually the very ones who aren’t being tolerant themselves.
In spite of my comments on muslims I am not intolerant of them; only reserved in dealing with them. And in that line of thinking I try not to make overall judgements but rather individual judgements because all muslims are not bad.
December 14, 2007 - 09:07 AM on December 14th, 2007
18, I know I don’t tolerate SFL and Mattias’ nonsense.
December 14, 2007 - 09:39 AM on December 14th, 2007
Matthias did touch a nerve with me PCD but that was because he was disrespectful and sometimes inappropriate in his responses. No one says you can’t disagree but disagreement can often bring up other points. Dare I say I can even remember agreeing with my liberal father in law on one issue. It actually brought us together for just a moment while we talked about the pros and cons of the issue.
SFL has the typical liberal worldview that if only we all got along everyone would be better off. He totally ignores real threats. Threats the U.S. and worse, other innocent third world countries experience day in and day out. But that doesn’t mean we can’t keep trying to change them.
December 14, 2007 - 09:49 AM on December 14th, 2007
To me Mattias is the typical well off, spoiled brat. He rebels against his parents and society in every way he can to get attention and exercise power.
SFL is the typical San Franciso Clown. As long as they can smoke their bongs, vandalize recruiting centers, and thumb their noses at convention, they are happy until something happens. Like during the World Series quake, they run to TV cameras with their hands out palms up demanding that their hands be filled and overflowing.
December 14, 2007 - 10:29 AM on December 14th, 2007
320 BonBon you have identified one of the fundamental problems with the Liberal viewpoint: They ignore the reality of human nature. For example, they believe that if we want Peace, we can just have Peace! They ignore the fact that both sides must want Peace. If one side doesn’t want Peace, there will be no Peace until that side no longer has the ability to wage war; i.e. is totally, utterly defeated.
The Libs disregard that reality, living in their fantasy world. Like the Pacifists, they owe their ability to exist as they are to those of us who deal with reality.
December 14, 2007 - 10:42 AM on December 14th, 2007
That’s pretty much as I see it Robert. We have even been accused of not wanting peace and that is such an insult that is when I get upset. Most people want peace but when you have people who want power (Hugo Chavez) or death to anyone not of their religion (OBL) you have to fight back.
