Except when you look at the total cost of ownership. My 2001 Ford Escape has 157000 miles and the only thing I have replaced except tires and brakes is the power brake booster unit. On many imports I would have had to replace brake rotors because they are too thin to be resurfaced more than once. And when you buy those foreign parts? You pay 2x or more than the cost of comparable American car parts.
The Escape gets 25 MPG highway, in safety, comfort, and with on-demand 4WD when I need it (which I have used many times). All for ~$22,000 new in Dec 2000. No car in the world can beat that combination at that price.

So what were you saying about how great European and Japanese cars are SFL? Did you read that somewhere?

Have any of you been to Europe recently? Or Japan?

The cars and trucks they use are so much better than the crap we have here on so many different levels. Economy, environment, etc.

THAT is what I’m talking about…what the US needs to follow as an example.

Clearly, what Detroit is doing now isn’t working. Time for a change.

5, FAO, If I were Ford, I’d develope a new Probe that ran on E85, was very light weight, AND VERY FAST. Sell about 2500 of them and then bring back the 429 side oilers in a full sized Thunderbird.

The facts are the other than the ecological disaster waiting to happen hybrids, the GM product line is pretty damn fuel efficient. The Northstar engine gives better gas mileage at highway speeds than any foreign truck on the market. With the technology that GM has learned from their Saturn line, I expect GM to start producing more vehicles with the polycarbonite body panels which are substantially lighter than the current steel ones, thereby allowing for better gas mileage. If you want to drive around in a subcompact (I have a Ford Focus for work) there are plenty out there. The liberal morons who think that the world is going to convert to driving absurdly small cars need to pull their heads out of rectal defillade. The new CAFE standards are a joke. They may require that car makers have an average mileage for their lines, but that doesn’t mean that those cars are actually going to sell. The Nissan Armada and Nissan Titan both sell extremely well, they also have some of the worst gas mileage on the market for their class. Automakers might have 20 models that average 50MPG, and 20 models that average 20 MPG and still meet the standards. Of course they may only sell 1000 of each of the 50 MPG models and millions of the 20 MPG models and still meet the standards. Were I in charge of an Automaker, I’d develop one 50+ MPG drivetrain and have the design department come up with 20 body styles to put on it. I’d make about 1000 of each, test market them and list them in the catalog as limited availability. I would then go on with production as normal on everything else. BTW exactly what are the libs going to do when they discover that without trucks, they won’t be able to get their granola, brie or pinot grigio delivered to their nearest market.

When they are at the bottom, will they then finally “get it”??

The era of the SUV is coming to an end. And not soon enough.
