Leno or Letterman?
I would always pick Leno over Letterman. The New York Post pointed out that it took a team of writers for Letterman to return, but Jay did it all by himself. Jay did some great jokes that all of us have cracked at one time or another:
“Now it looks like this writers strike will affect Hollywood’s award season,” Leno said. “Now if you are not familiar with award season in Hollywood, it runs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 every year!
“In fact,” Leno said, “did you know this? Do you know that the Golden Globes is the largest gathering of stars anywhere, outside the Promises rehab clinic in Malibu?”
Nikki Finke was less than pleased with Jay. He wrote his own monologue, which I guess is a no no?!?!? Well, he has a non-writing staff that still needs to be paid.
Leno addressed that very issue during the monologue: “You know what I’m doing? I’m doing what I did the day I started. I write jokes and wake my wife up in the middle of the night and say, ‘Honey, is this funny?’ So if this monologue doesn’t work it’s my wife’s fault,” he explained. “We are not using outside guys. We are following the guild thing… We can write for ourselves…”
Jay hasn’t forgotten where he came from. He made it to that seat by writing his own material, and his survival depends on it to this day. He was able to put on a show without a writing team and he seemed happy to be back..too bad the same can’t be said for Dave.
