Lawmakers have proposed legislation that forbids restaurants and food establishments from serving food to anyone who is obese

Ouch!

  1. As usial liberas think tat goverment can tak care of the peoples problems when all tey do its uase more trouble:-&

  2. Well this is troubling. Government needs to stay the hell out of our lives. Even more disturbing is that it is introduced by a Republican.

  3. Don’t worry about it. Obesity won’t be a problem in this country if Obama, Clinton, or McCain are elected. These three have apparently no ability to look at the long term effects of their actions. If the McCain-Lieberman anti global warming bill (a 50 cent tax per gallon on gas) and the most recent highway bill (another 40 cent per gallon tax on gas) become law, gas prices will automatically approach $4.25 per gallon or HIGHER depending on market conditions. Diesel prices will probably not be far behind. With Hillary’s stated intention of seizing the profits EARNED by the oil companies, expect prices to increase another $ 1 – 2 per gallon. At that rate, farmers will no longer be able to affordably till, plant or harvest their fields (tractors don’t run on water and air) except for ethanol production which is heavily subsidized. Once the grain crops can no longer be grown economically, the farmers will be forced to stop farming. With grain production greatly reduced, meat, poultry, dairy, and egg prices will skyrocket. Food prices have already started to climb because of the grain that’s being diverted to ethanol. Imagine how much higher they’ll go when that’s the only grain that’s being grown. We all won’t have to worry about being obese. We’re going to have to worry about starving unless we own our own means of producing food and the means to protect it. Considering last summer’s food riots in Mexico over the increased cost of tortillas because of US Ethanol diversion of US corn production, how wrong can I be?

BJ Billy this weekend has said we need to slow the economy to save the earth for our grandkids. I want him to explain the practical aspects of that to people who have lost their jobs and can’t feed their kids because of the hoax claiming that global warming is man made.

  4. I’m surprised that none of you fiscal conservatives out there are pointing out just how much fat americans unfairly raise costs for everyone else.

If we wanted to save money and save lives, we’d best figure out ways to help people eat less shitty foods.

Maybe make big warning labels on each fast food container. Two inch high calorie displays, maybe…

  5. SFL. There is not doubt Americans who have received plenty of bounty over the years are now paying the price with obesity. Having said that though it is not the governments business to engineer or try to control our actions. I do not want government to tell me what to do or how to eat.

What I do think is good policy is allowing private healthcare to promote good health by offering incentives. As an example right now car insurance can be had at a better rate for young drivers if they do well in school. My son received $100 for each semester he got a 3.0gpa or above. There could also be incentives for weight management.

  6. As with smoking (I smoke), we know the risks of over-eating. Incentives are good. Health classes should be covering this in schools. One of our local grociers set up a kids snack stand right up front as you grab a cart..for a quarter, you get a piece of fruit to eat while Mom or Dad shops..

WHERE in the Constitution does it come anywhere near giving the Gov’t any authority to do anything like this? It doesn’t.

If the Gov’t can do this, I can make the argument it is up to the Gov’t to prevent people from being stupid. Now that opens up just about everything. Like banning them from voting for Democrats, for example.

This is insidious, unConstitutional, and anyone who would allow it should be sent to Cuba to enjoy their vision of paradise.

  8. SFL, how about we cut liberals off from all government programs?

  9. SFL, if we don’t have liberals leaching off the rest of us, you fat liberals will get out and work it off.

  10. “BJ Billy this weekend has said we need to slow the economy to save the earth for our grandkids”

More talk from an elitist about how the rest of us should be controlled and regulated, but not them.

Hmmm, I didn’t look very hard and its a but old, so I could be off on this one…but it seems that there are with a few exceptions higher obesity rates in Red States than in more Liberal Blue States.

That, my dear PCD friend, means that there are more obese conservatives that there are obese liberals.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it…

    ;)

  12. But back to my original question; where are the fiscal conservatives who are interested in saving millions, if not billions of dollars by having government promote healthier eating lifestyles or mandating warning labels?

Lower health care costs…family units staying together longer, I dunno…

  13. SFL- have you been in a coma or have not had access to television? The advertising has never been higher for healthy food choices..Why is it that you think a person needs the government to mandate eating healthy..Schools should be discussing this in health class..we learned nutrition when I went to school.

Healthcare= Actually, kids need to take responsibility for their parents welfare..It doen’t mean they have to move in together, just have a plan and make sure the plan is followed through..Have you and your siblings talked about this? Do you know what meds your parents are on and what they take them for? Do you know what doctors they go to? Have you ever looked up the ratings of these doctors? Do you know their advanced planning directives? Are any of you kids listed at the doctors office as someone that is allowed to receive medical info? SFL, you are a good example. Your parents are in MI and you in CA…You don’t need to move back, nor do they need to move out there..what you need to do is figure out who does what when it is time to step in and just guide them along..you’ll know when it is time to take over, but it’s that period where you are unsure that can be difficult..that’s why it is a good idea to have a sibling listed with access to the doctor..

  14. “SFL, you are a good example. Your parents are in MI and you in CA:You don’t need to move back, nor do they need to move out there..what you need to do is figure out who does what when it is time to step in and just guide them along…”

I’m fortunate. I have an older brother who lives in Ohio that, I assume, is going to shoulder most of the responsibilty…

Still have some time, I hope. My folks are only in their mid-60′s.

    SFL is…gasp!…30 years old.

  15. “have you been in a coma or have not had access to television?”

    ————————-

I realize that I live in a tiny bubble called San Francisco. My wife is vegan, many of my friends are vegitarians, and the vast majority of my fellow citizens appea to not be over-weight.

I also don’t have cable TV, so I may be missing some stuff here and there.

I’m not saying that I believe government should be involved, I’m only asking why conservatives who value saving massive amounts of money don’t think there should be more involvment.

  16. SFL- it isn’t the governments job to do that. When I was in grade school we learned the basic food groups and nutrition. Parents should be doing this. One doesn’t need to be a vegan to be eating healthy. Schools are getting away from the pop and candy machines. The meals are becoming more healthy for the students..all without the congress screwing it up…Take the 300lb person though..do you really think that government intervention is going to stop the intake? We also have the other end of the spectrum..we live in a society with size 0 clothing? Kids die everyday from eating disorders..should the government step in on that? Should they ban the majority of advertising? Regulate the size of the actress that can appear on tv? No.

14- Now would be the time for you and your brother to have the talk while your parents are still young and healthy and have many years ahead of them..just don’t assume your brother will do the work..My parents actually welcomed me stepping in..The doctors offices really liked it and it has made things much better.

  17. Thanks for the tip, Pam…
It’s hard to accept, but I know that future isn’t too far away for them, in the grand scheme of things. It’s definitely good to have something planned well in advance…

  18. It’s not that conservatives aren’t concerned about people being healthy, it’s that we recognize that people have the right and responsibility to make those decisions for themselves. I personally know that I have to watch my weight and cholesterol. At 230, my BP is a bit too high. At 210, it’s great. Guess which one I try to stay closer to? As for cholesterol, it tends to be a little high but not enough to require medication. I just make smart choices when I shop. More chicken, and part skim, low fat mozzarella in lieu of monterey jack. That keeps my cholesterol down. BTW in 2006, at 209 I passed the Body Fat analysis for a military physical for a new recruit 10 yrs younger than I am. At 210, my BMI is 3.0. Unfortunately my cholesterol was 207. 7 points too high.

SFL, just a word on eating Vegan. More power to you, just keep in mind that a diet that works for adults, may not work for kids. We had an uber vegan set of parents here lose their kids and go to jail for neglect because the kids were so malnourished that they were half the body weight they should’ve been.

  19. FAO- A tip from my hubby..in the morning, he switched to eating oatmeal and that dropped it really fast..

  20. 11, SFL, Say that again when you see Jerome Nadler and Teddy Kennedy.

Another thing, when it comes to a person’s food bowl, the best advice is stay the F*CK out or they’ll kill you.

I marvel that you lived to 30 without someone terminating you.

  21. I marvel that your parents let a 12 year old like you use the computer so often.

  22. A flea has more brains then SFL and those food cops:-j
