I had an NCO who had been told by a judge that he had a choice of prison or the Army. As long as he completed 3 years with an honorable discharge the judge would drop the charges against him. The Sergeant had been in 13 years when I met him and said it was the best thing that the judge could’ve done for him. I think that would be an adequate punishment. 3 Year enlistment with an honorable discharge and keep your civil rights, or 3 years in prison and lose them. At any time should the perp get out of line, he/she could immediately be mustered out directly into the custody of the appropriate penal institution. It wouldn’t take too many of these types of arrangements to fix the war protestors’ problems. For those incapable of serving, one year in prison with 2 years deferred (felony time, lose rights) and 5 years on probation. At any time should they be arrested again, they have violated their probation and would be sent back to prison to serve the remaining two years of their sentences. This would stop the violence and destruction permanently. Put a few of the rabble rousers in prison, and a few in a squad bay for Basic training, and POOF, the rest learn to protest peacefully.
