George Bush’s proposal to have the Fed regulate the banking system. It is based on Norway’s banking model.
Norway is a socialist country! This is a purely socialist system!
This is supremely poor idea folks, and is a horrible idea. This WILL lead to our downfall as a nation.
After this, is their any doubt in anyone’s mind that THE REPUBLICANS ARE AS SOCIALIST AS THE DEMOCRATS!
Socialism does not work!

Next on the open thread agenda…Hillary Clinton finally released some details of her socialist healthcare system. It says it will cost a person between 5%-10% of their income.
(!)
Holy crap.
Clinton’s is a MANDATED TAX folks. You have NO CHOICE but to pay.
This is a dramatic cost increase for me and the vast majority of people in the Untied States. For an average family of 4, this is $3000-$6000 PER YEAR.
When will folks realize that whether in a Democrat form or Republican form…
SOCIAL-ISM SUCKS IN ALL FORMS!!!!!! IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!

The fed already regulates the Banking system Ted.
March 31, 2008 - 11:17 AM on March 31st, 2008
*Sigh*
No, it doesn’t. It effects banks through policy, but does not regulate them per se. The diffrence is subtle, but exists none the less.
The Fed sets the nation’s monetary policy (such as interst rate loans to the major banks, etc) and it’s supply which in turn can effect the economy, interst on Treasury Bills, etc. It is only partly a governement entity as the BoG is appointed by the President, however the memebers function mainly independant of governement there after.
While there is a regulatory comitee, it is only over banks that are members of the Fed System, bank holding companies, international banking facilities in the United States, Edge Act and agreement corporations, foreign activities of member banks, and the U.S. activities of foreign-owned banks.
The Bush/Paulson system will regulate all banks, even some insurance companies, assume responibilities of the SEC, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, regulate business conduct affecting consumers and investors (such a broad term is dangerous- as that is undefined and no one knows what that menas). Above that Bernake is calling for more authority than even that. They want to eliminate private part that mainly governs the Fed. Virtually every aspect of finance will be controlled by the governement.

In simplest terms, the Fed regulates money, not the banking system.
March 31, 2008 - 12:35 PM on March 31st, 2008
Yes Ted, banks are regulated under federal jurisdiction. They have been for quite a few years. This is expanding existing laws and merging regulatory commissions. Here are the proposed changes
March 31, 2008 - 01:39 PM on March 31st, 2008
That is a common misconception, only the member banks are Pam. They regulate the monetary system, not the banks.
Thanks, but I’ve already read that article, as well as a dozen others on this topic.
But I won’t continue to argue the point with you. I voted for Bush, and what a mistake that was. I didn’t realize it at the time. Now he is going into full throttle social-ist mode. He is actively destroying this country now.
Should have paid more attention to history, as the neo-cons history was partially rooted in communist Russia.
But I say that as if there was any other legitimate choice at the time and there wasn’t.
Lesson learned the hard way I guess, but at least I’ve finally learned it.
Enjoy your socialist regime if Juan McLame gets elected. You won’t win the war, even if he wins the election. Our bullets will be made in China, and this nation will go broke. Every child is right now is born in debt $100,000.00 because of Bush, McCain, Clinton, Carter and 50 years worth of mostly socialist Presidents and Congress in the two parties. Imagine what it will be for my grandchildren. If this country were a business, we be forced to declare bankrupcy and it will only get worse. McCain talks about earmarks, but that’s a raindrop in the ocean and folks are falkling for it. McCain;s capitulation will only eorsen things.
Pity- this nation is screwed.

Ted, the government does regulate banking in this country.
Aside from the FDIC, NCUA and the Federal Reserve, there is the Office of Thrift Supervision, and Office of the Currency Comptroller. Depending on how far out of compliance an institution is with the regulations, they have the authority to stop a financial institution’s merger and acquisition activity, opening new offices and the like.
Do you think it’s a good idea to do business with this country’s enemies? The Office of Foreign Asset Control doesn’t think so, and that has been the policy since the Revolutionary War.
Does it make sense that banks should serve the community in which they’re based? The Community Reinvestment Act says they have to, and all banks have to keep meticulous records as to how they serve those communities.
Do you think banks should to extend the same opportunity for everyone to qualify for credit and savings accounts at a favorable rate? Truth in Lending, Truth in Savings, and a number of other regs and laws prevent such sweetheart deals.
So it doesn’t really matter if an institution is a member of the FDIC or other entity; as soon as as they engage in that activity, they are subject to all the laws, rules and regs governing the industry.

Obama takes the lead in Pennsylvania…
“Barack Obama has taken the lead in Pennsylvania, a remarkable turnaround after trailing Hillary Clinton by 26 points in a PPP poll in the state just two and a half weeks ago.”

SF, out of curiousity, who are you giving serious consideration to on the Dem side?

Obama is his one true love!
He doesn’t like Hillary to well!

I’m sure HilLiary’s attack dog hit team is right now discussing their strategy. Take Obama down piece by piece, or go nuclear with all the dirt at once?
I can’t wait. I want to see it: HilLiary doing what Klinton’s do best, and Obama fully revealed as unfit for Leadership.

#16…LOL
“…cause I’m in love with Obama”
April 2, 2008 - 08:08 PM on April 2nd, 2008
Sasha, honestly, I wouldn’t really mind Hillary as the Dem nominee. I think she’d be a formidable opponet to McCain and, in my opinion, I think she’d make a fine president.
That said, I really believe it’s time for something/someone new. Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton…there’s something not right about that. And we all know she probably wouldn’t make much progress in reducing the overly negative tone in DC.
Obama, to me and many others, represents something new and exciting. His political personality seems to be less confrontational than Hillary. It seems that Obama would be more likely to try and bring people together from both sides to try and get something done.
I’m sure the RV gang will groan and roll their eyes when I say this; but to many people Obama represents a new “hope” for “change”.
And, let’s not forget how symbolically important it would be to elect a minority as President. What a fine example of racial progress that would be. (!)
April 2, 2008 - 08:37 PM on April 2nd, 2008
20: Okay. I really can’t argue with a conviction level belief, I was just wondering. A former coworker of mine with whom I enjoy an incredible relationship said pretty much the same thing you did.
I hope you can understand the groan and eye roll on our part with the Obama hope-change riff. what does that look like when put into action?
April 2, 2008 - 10:42 PM on April 2nd, 2008
It would a great milestone for a minority to be elected President. Lets just get a good one…ditto for a woman…
