Half the Colombian government — including Uribe — has ties with paramilitary groups who are far more affluent in the narcotics industry than the FARC are.

Colombia used to have great Coffee growers until the market was flooded by foreign goods and those campesinos then turned to coca farming as that’s the only thing they get paid a living wage for. Not to mention the fumigation of coca fields has spilled over into legitimate farms and polluted the rivers. Thank the U.S. government for those wonderful ideas. Free trade, yeah, that works great.
