The Bureau of Land Management opened 3.9 million acres of land in Alaska for drilling and exploration:
The US federal government on Wednesday said it would open 3.9m acres of land in a designated petroleum reserve in Alaska for drilling as a means to help curb rising petrol prices. :
But the Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the US Department of the Interior, said the Alaskan land that will now be offered requires no other approvals and will be up for leasing in the autumn.
The site was set aside decades ago but development was blocked by lawsuits from environmentalists concerned about disrupting wildlife. The government has tackled these fears, making it a condition of the lease by oil and gas companies that polar bears, waterfowl and caribou are protected.
According to the New York Times, the field could contain as much as 3.7 billion barrels of oil. It could start producing oil by 2010, which seems to blow the 7-10 year rule that the hard left keeps throwing out there. Since Monday, oil prices have tumbled, with oil falling more than $10/barrell, the largest such reduction in almost 20 years. The media will have you believe that the prices fell due to “demand destruction”, yet all of us didn’t wake up Monday morning and just stop driving. This is directly related to the fact that the POTUS lifted the restrictions on the off-shore drilling, and even as he spoke, they were tumbling down, down, down. China and India will gobble up any oil that we may not use, therefore, the demand will not drop. The price drops when more oil is entered into the mix. There will be more oil, now that we have lifted some restrictions. Example; OPEC won’t increase their production, therefore keeping the prices high. After 9/11, OPEC increased it’s production to help us out(Thank-you), and the POTUS released some of the Petroleum reserves(This is what is meant to be for). Once this happened, our prices dropped. As soon as the respective suppliers of the commodity went back to “the norm”, the prices went up.
The POTUS finally got one right, now it’s time for Congress to follow suit!
Allahpundit reports that “Drill now”: Newt’s group delivers 1.3 million petition signatures to Congress
Darned impressive. Maybe it is the “conservative MoveOn,” minus the periodic bleats for attention that end up sabotaging its own side.
Your companion reading for the clip (aside from the American Solutions fact sheet on drilling, natch) is FactCheck’s critique of Obama’s “fast track” alternative, which turns out not to be so fast. Remember the next time you see some Democrat sneering that drilling now won’t produce any oil in the short term that St. Barack’s time horizon for alternative fuels is fully 10 years, predictably with “no guarantee that just spending more for research will produce the sort of new fuels, vehicles or other breakthroughs that would actually reverse the growth of oil imports.” He promised you Change, but he didn’t promise you it’d happen before, oh, say, 2020.
TELL CONGRESS: Drill Here, Drill Now, So We Can Pay Less
