Baghdad Jim McDermott Proposes Gas Stamps For The Poor

Or slush funds for states,  depending on what the definition of creativity is:

“Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, introduced legislation today to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Americans struggling to survive under crushing gasoline prices.”

“The Emergency Gasoline Assistance Act (H.R. 6561) would create a program to provide $5 billion to states as a one-time grant with the money designated to provide assistance to families of modest means to purchase gasoline. This program could provide every family that is currently living below the federal poverty threshold with $500 in assistance. State governors would have the flexibility to use the money to create programs that target the specific needs of their communities.”

McDermott said he did it in the spirit of JFK’s quote:

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

Here is the full quote:

To those peoples in the huts and villages across the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required–not because the Communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

Help them help themselves always seems to get dropped when quoting the speech.  As does,

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

  1. Okay, this is ridiculous. Can I be the first person to call for an impeachment of Nancy Pelosi? She is ignoring the stated will of seventy-four percent of the American people, blamed her own colossal blundering and inarticulate flailing on President Bush, and now her empty suits are recommending that we dig DEEPER into OUR OWN POCKETS to fund gas for “the poor?”

You know what would help out the poor, Nancy? DRILL ANWR!

Anyone know who makes bumper stickers? I want two: “Impeach Pelosi” and “Drill ANWR!”

THIS is precisely why I am called…

  3. McDermott, a known traitor, should have that stamped permanently on his forehead then be banished from American soil.

  5. Thanks Pam. You can email me through my blog if you get him to make those up. I’ll happily buy a couple dozen of each for friends and family.
