The Barackopolis Open Thread…Reaction To Obama’s Coronation..Speech Added
Consider this an open thread to discuss Obama’s coronation. List your favorite parts of the speech or the commentary surrounding it!
The Speech is titled “The American Promise”:
“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.
“It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well.
“It is why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors — found the courage to keep it alive.
“We meet at one of those defining moments – a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more.
“Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach
“These challenges are not all of government’s making. But the failure to respond is a direct result of a broken politics in Washington and the failed presidency of George W. Bush.
“America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”
***“This moment – this election – is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive. Because next week, in Minnesota, the same party that brought you two terms of George Bush and Dick Cheney will ask this country for a third. And we are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight. On November 4th, we must stand up and say: “Eight is enough.”
“Now let there be no doubt. The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect. And next week, we’ll also hear about those occasions when he’s broken with his party as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need.
“But the record’s clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than ninety percent of the time? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.”
***
“You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.“We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put away a little extra money at the end of each month so that you can someday watch your child receive her diploma. We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was President – when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.
“We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job – an economy that honors the dignity of work.
“The fundamentals we use to measure economic strength are whether we are living up to that fundamental promise that has made this country great – a promise that is the only reason I am standing here tonight.”
***
“That’s the promise we need to keep. That’s the change we need right now. So let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am President.
.
“Change means a tax code that doesn’t reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.“Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.
“I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow.
“I will cut taxes – cut taxes – for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.
“And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.
“Washington has been talking about our oil addiction for the last thirty years, and John McCain has been there for twenty-six of them. In that time, he’s said no to higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars, no to investments in renewable energy, no to renewable fuels. And today, we import triple the amount of oil as the day that Senator McCain took office.
“Now is the time to end this addiction, and to understand that drilling is a stop-gap measure, not a long-term solution. Not even close.
“As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power. I’ll help our auto companies re-tool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America. I’ll make it easier for the American people to afford these new cars. And I’ll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy – wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and five million new jobs that pay well and can’t ever be outsourced.”
***
“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe. The Bush-McCain foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of Americans — Democrats and Republicans – have built, and we are to restore that legacy.
“As Commander-in-Chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm’s way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home.
“I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. I will build new partnerships to defeat the threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear proliferation; poverty and genocide; climate change and disease. And I will restore our moral standing so that America is once more the last, best hope for all who are called to the cause of freedom, who long for lives of peace, and who yearn for a better future.”
Don fact checks the speech:
My favorites
3. “You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.”
FACT: True.
3. “Change means a tax code that doesn’t reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.”
FACT: His vice presidential candidate has a son who is a lobbyist.
4. “I will cut taxes -– cut taxes -– for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.”
FACT: Under George Walker Bush the number of working Americans who pay no federal income tax rose from 29 million to 45 million, or roughly 30% of all people who work. It is doubtful that he could eliminate taxes for another 90 million earners to raise that percentage to 95%.
And they would still have to pay FICA, and with the employer match, that 15% of one’s pay.

It’s that “work hard for” that many don’t seem to grasp.

August 28, 2008 - 08:47 PM on August 28th, 2008
I still think the ad to come out of this speech will be the “I am my brothers keeper” line lol
August 28, 2008 - 08:53 PM on August 28th, 2008
Obama came down from Olympus to address the gathered mortals fawning over his every word. What a spectacle indeed! Maggots in the soil at Invesco Field musty be gagging.
Every other point Obama makes is just so utterly pathetic because the truth is so different. What especially annoys, no enrages me is when he invokes the military and vterans and tries to act like he and the Democrites love and support them so.
You mean the same military they didn’t want to count the votes of in 2000? The same military called murderers and terrorists by their leadership?
August 28, 2008 - 08:54 PM on August 28th, 2008
Yes, Lou - that very same military.
Obama reminds me of the kid running for class president who promises everyone free lunch if only they would vote for him.
August 28, 2008 - 09:05 PM on August 28th, 2008
At what point will McCain run an ad thanking Obama for changing his mind and words to agree with McCain positions on
- the threat in Iran
- the war in Afghanistan
- the need to pursue alternative energy
- etc.?
A speech where the devil is in the details NOT spoken (e.g. define the “working class” that will receive 95% of tax cuts) and flip-flops from other speeches and legislative actions not addressed - may the right side forcefully expose those!
August 28, 2008 - 09:27 PM on August 28th, 2008
It appears that Juan Williams tried to find something..anything..and he looks very disappointed. His point about the energy was true. Obama promised alternative energy etc., in 10 years, but he won’t even be in office.
I will say that I took notice of the look on Obama’s face and his body language as he left the stage, and thought of the congratulations that McCain sent. Job well done Senator.. Maybe in 8 years you will be ready to win the election

Dude, McCain wanted to have like ten debates that you shied away from.
August 28, 2008 - 09:44 PM on August 28th, 2008
Dear Cat_Rescuer,
Perhaps you should look at the positions a little more closely. The Republican Party’s record on alternative sources of fuel are a broken record “Drill, Drill, Drill”. McCain actually impressed me on wanting to convert the Federal Fleet to hybrids, but I think that was to give GM a new contract for their donation. Obama’s position on alternative fuels has been clear since day one. This includes nuclear and clean-coal technologies.

“We ALL put our country first.”
Unless there is a European country we need to consult…. or a lobbyist that we need to appease…or the UN that we need permission from… or enemies of this country we need to confer with… or domestic terrorists we need to have lunch with…
August 28, 2008 - 09:53 PM on August 28th, 2008
Well, actually David, Obama has not been clear as you think he is still talking clean coal..he dumped that when the kossacks jumped all over him. You and I have discussed the Republican platform and the only broken record is the perpetuation of lies being repeated.
We need to drill and we need to find viable, as in affordable, alnernative fuel sources. We need to do this in tandem. I heard Hillary claim there were going to be all kinds of green collar jobs, but i haven’t heard the discussion about what will happen to the employees of the existing power companies, the existing oil companies etc..won’t we just be trading bodies, not actually adding new?
August 28, 2008 - 09:57 PM on August 28th, 2008
Lisa, we will have 3 debates and that’s it..Obama won’t agree to any townhall style debates..I am guessing because they won’t let him refer to his blackberry for the answers?!?!
Did anyone see Brian Williams ask the bitter half about the prospect of moving into the Whitehouse where Abigail Adams lived and slaves built the place? I thought that was classy
August 28, 2008 - 10:19 PM on August 28th, 2008
Pam, Obama won’t do the townhall for the same reasons he won’t do O’Reilly’s show. Fear.
The one and only thing I’m willing to give the Obama campaign is the historic nature of it. Tonight was an historic one for this country - like him, or not. Chris, my husband, is from the UK and he looks at American politics as a little behind the times. He has a hard time getting teary eyed and passionate about Hillary’s historic campaign… “Europe has had female leaders for years.. what’s the big deal??” Damn Brits… from Rugby to politics, they’re so superior lol (err..according to them ha)
Oh, and David - Barack borrowed a page from the Republicans ‘all of the above’ energy solution when he flipped his stance on offshore drilling. Personally, I think it was Paris Hilton who finally convinced him haha
August 28, 2008 - 10:27 PM on August 28th, 2008
Agree or not agree, there was quite a bit of substance to Obama’s comments tonight. I’m surprised that all you could come up with is a specious argument which erroneously offers that, somehow, Obama has promised to eliminate taxes on 90% of Americans, It’s ludicrous.
Second comment, about his employment — the guy is a politician, and has been, for 15 years.
And, just for drill, every convention is a coronation event, at least when they’re done right. You’re rowing with one paddle, man.
And to Lisa — McCain’s proposed “debates” were nothing more than a feeble attempt to take Obama off the road, to put him in McCain’s wheelhouse. They were a political ploy to change the momentum. The debates will happen. They just won’t be manipulated by one side.
I think Obama did his bit by showing up for the Saddleback discussion, where, while Obama talked thoughtfully about difficult issues, McCain aides were listening on their cell phones, furiously taking notes in his limousine, preparing the world-class pandering which McCain offered.
McCain is a simplistic, not-too-bright, needy old whore who deserves nothing except his medals and treatment at Walter Reed (As if he would ever go there personally — even though his medical treatment for his melanoma was paid for by taxpayers, it wasn’t at a VA hospital). He’s as out of touch with the American people as he is inexorably tied to corporate oil. You would think that a man of his stature would know better than to go begging to big oil so shamelessly, changing his offshore drilling position in a clear quid pro quo which resulted in massive contributions from the oil companies. But few McCain advocates think, apparently.
I search often for intelligent debate. I’m a Democrat that’s willing to listen. But you guys are a mess.
August 28, 2008 - 10:48 PM on August 28th, 2008
No, Mike - McCain asked Obama to do the debates to bring the campaign where it belongs. To the people for thoughtful debate on the issues. Instead, Obama spent his time taking his campaign to Europe.
The Saddleback allegations that McCain somehow had advanced knowledge of the questions has no legs, man. No proof. It was just liberal talking points, and ridiculous allegations, to cover how miserably Obama performed. Most intelligent debate you find on the topic agree.
The thing I do agree with you on is that there was a great deal of substance in his speech tonight - - it was a good speech. It’s a shame that there is no substance in the orator.
Thanks for dropping by.

This is an historic moment for him and I gladly tip my hat to him.

I think that Sen. Obama gave a great speech tonight.
It’s going to be hard for McOld to follow up with something better…
August 29, 2008 - 06:36 AM on August 29th, 2008
The Speech was fluff, filled with one liners to try an intice voters to head to the polls for the candidate of the people.
Obama’s actions are different than his rhetoric:
Start with Tony Rezko…follow the Money $
Michelle’s Hospital..Follow the Money $
Bill Ayers ……….follow the Money $
Lobbyists….follow the Money $
Acorn….Follow the Money $
……Follow the Money $
….Follow the Power!!
With Obama it is all about personal power, self aggrandizement, change in his name, and out of control ego. His supporters are in the spot light and they love it. The Keith Olbermanns, Howard Deans, and George Soroses of the world are all giddy with the prospect of taking over and running this country into the ground.
It is time to take the personality out of our minds and look at his potential policies that will weaken America and pull us down to second and third rate world power while lowering our moral standards.

How about a LOT less rhetoric and a LOT more experience?
August 29, 2008 - 10:20 AM on August 29th, 2008
Obama’s speech was more of the same old same old. Misrepresentations, promising freebies, making absurd statements. Trotting out the Class Warfare crap when the very richest in the Senate are Democrites.
There were some particularly stupid statements:
1. The cost of fuel is too high so he’s going to have solar power and wind power [providing half our energy. So he’s going to put a big solar panel on the roof of your car, or perhaps a large wind turbine? He’s going to invest in alternative fuels! But won’t even utter the N word (Nuclear).
2. McCain won’t follow Bin Laden to the cave where he’s living. Okay Obama, if you know where Bin Laden is, we’ll give you the arrest warrant and you can go to Pakistan and serve it. Idiot.
3. He supported going into Afghanistan with more troops, more power to fight our real enemy, Al Qaeda. No, he was against everything, and only after Bush invaded Iraq did the Democrites start clamoring about how we should focus on Afghanistan. It was a red-herring, a smokescreen, just to try to provide cover.
4. Anytime he invoked any mention of the sacrifices of the US Armed Forces. The Democrites hate the military, they don’t want their votes counted and their leadership has called our troops cold-blooded murderers and terrorists. Osama Obama once himself referred to our Air Force as mostly just going around bombing villages and killing civilians. No Democrites, don’t even bring up the subject of the US Military, because you have NO moral authority to do so, you low-life skumbags.
August 29, 2008 - 11:10 AM on August 29th, 2008
Robert,
My reaction to that cave comment was two-fold…Obama doesn’t know which committees he serves on, and those that he chairs, have never met, so I guess he didn’t see the error of that stupid statement.
It is my understanding that OBL is in Pakistan and we can’t just go marching into his cave..but I could be wrong
August 29, 2008 - 07:44 PM on August 29th, 2008
“How about Sarah Palin?”
———
LOL…Who?!
This was a weak pick for McOld - she has limited political experience (come on…Alaska?! the population of San Francisco has more residents than her Entire State!) and does not seem presidential at all.
Enjoy the headlines and attention for now my friends, because Biden is likely going to wipe the floor with her at the VP debates.
Just like Obama will with McCain when they are side by side on TV at the “debates”…The New Man vs The Old Man.
August 29, 2008 - 07:48 PM on August 29th, 2008
In addition, the vast majority of “Upset Hillary Voters” won’t go for the bait…Palin is very Anti-Choice, and that’s a BIG issue with the Hillary-Feminists.
August 29, 2008 - 08:37 PM on August 29th, 2008
You think that the anger of those supporters centers around abortion? Really? Here’s a newsflash SFL, it isn’t about abortion, it’s about being passed over yet again. It’s about the more qualified woman having to defer to the less qualified man, because he is a man. It’s about Obama telling them to “just get over it” when Hillary suspended her campaign. It’s about the women on his staff who made $6,000 less than men on average. It’s about the reporters like John Roberts that seem to think a woman cant hold an office and raise a child.
Wake up SFL, it’ll take more than an abortion for them to “get over it”
August 29, 2008 - 10:08 PM on August 29th, 2008
Kinda funny when Obamiacs are pointing fingers at Sarah Palin and saying she doesn’t have enough experience. When she has more Executive experience than Obama has. She also has a vastly greater record of accomplishments than the Community Organizer has.
And Biden is a tired old hack, who has been in Congress so long he is part of the problem. I predict he and Obama will go down in flames.
The Demcorites are their own worst enemy. They couldn’t even beat George Bush in 2004 because they put such a sad-sack loser against him.
August 29, 2008 - 10:16 PM on August 29th, 2008
SFL - needs someone to take him by the hand and lead him into a padded cell, throw away the key as he should not be out on the street anymore than Carter. Maybe they could sit this one out together.
Robert - good point about Obama, let’s send his sissy ass to get Osama, after all they are brothers. Want to take bets, Obama is all talk, “just words.” Same for Osama, he lets others do the dirty work because he’s a bigger sissy. If Osama exists, I could use the money, couldn’t you?
August 29, 2008 - 10:28 PM on August 29th, 2008
Mike you are the most messed up I’ve ever heard. Do you smoke crack like Obama? The two of you need your head examined. There is hope for some people, but not for you or Obama. Did you also serve on the Wood Foundation with Ayers and Obama? You know that crime is going to do Obama in. However McCain/Palin already have! Ayers will just be icing on the hot cake. This election is going to be such fun! Always is when you are a winner, not so fun when you are a loser, huh Mike?
Go John McCain and happy birthday, you look young and handsome. Happy anniversary to the Palin’s what a fine family, and great example to America the Beautiful. We have a win/win with McCain/Palin!
August 30, 2008 - 07:40 AM on August 30th, 2008
carolyne maybe that’s why the degenerates so quickly despise Sarah Palin (besides the fact she is now opposed to their Messiah). She’s normal, and she has a great family and a great record of accomplishments. She’s not a product of some dysfunction, like Obama is, and she has a record of solid accomplishments, the kind we need, unlike old hack Biden.
August 31, 2008 - 03:17 PM on August 31st, 2008
(Soon to be) President Barack Obama’s acceptance speech was magnificient, it was epic! It ranks with the greatest political speeches of all time! It may very well have been the best in all of history! The emotion and the electricity ran through the crowd at the stadium! I myself was so overcome with emotion that I actually wet my pants. Even though I was not there the radiant presence and power of Obama came through!
The Republicans are so lame, so tired so has-been. Putting an old man on the ticket who has been a Senator longer than most Obama supporters have been alive! Then putting this goofy woman who has no experience on the ticket. What she organized a bake sale for the local school or something?
We want CHANGE real change, change we can believe in! And Barack Obama, with a lifetime of experience, is just the one to do it! Aided by his senior VP who has been fighting Republicans for years and knows how to win!
August 31, 2008 - 03:22 PM on August 31st, 2008
“Obama promised alternative energy etc., in 10 years, but he won’t even be in office.”
Oh yes he might very well be! During his second term, as America has grown to love and cherish Obama as no other, The Democratic Party will institute another change: removing the limit on number of terms. Then we can have Obama forever!
August 31, 2008 - 05:29 PM on August 31st, 2008
Legend has it that a young Greek was once granted the power of flight through the gift of wings from his father. He was warned to be careful with the gift as they might melt should they get too warm. But he became so giddy with his success that he flew too high and the wings melted and he fell to his death. Obama is not the Messiah, he is not Apollo, though he is certainly acting like Icarus. In the Christian doctrine, it is said that Lucifer was an angel who, because of his pride, rebelled against God and was cast from heaven with his followers into the firey pit of Hell. From that story comes the adage that Pride cometh before the fall.
Obama is following in the footsteps of Icarus and Lucifer. The next question is: “What are the radical leftists going to do when/if he gets head handed to him in November?” They have shown themselves to be incredibly sore losers. They simply refuse to face the fact that they only represent about 20% of the general population. They may be a vocal minority (and a nasty one at that) but they are still a small minority.
August 31, 2008 - 06:01 PM on August 31st, 2008
FRMRARTYOFFCR - what you said is revelation, if people will take heed. God will have to divinely intervene, but all things are possible to those that believe. We have not because we ask not, so I’m believing and I’m asking. So thanks to God this Obama will never be elected. If Obama is not the Antichrist, he’s his twin brother. We have really been blessed in this election in being able to see this truth. Hopefully our country will be given more time. With John McCain, and Sarah Palin America will be spared from Obamageddon. God will provide, just keep standing.
IS LENNY REAL? Why would anyone wet their pants over Obama. unless they have a bladder problem. Lenny and Chris Matthews should get together to have shock treatments. Tell Lenny the next time he comes in contact with BO, just wet on BHO’s leg.
August 31, 2008 - 11:06 PM on August 31st, 2008
carolyne, perhaps Lenny was one of those idiots present at the Democrite Convention who were gazing glassy-eyed as if in a trance up at Obama as he spoke. Some of them, including men, were actually crying as they stood in the presence of their Messiah!
So it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine some could not control their bodily functions as they were so overcome by emotion.
This is the mark of a true moron, a babbling idiot.
August 31, 2008 - 11:40 PM on August 31st, 2008
I love that word Moron, great Robert, your descriptions are so accurate, and funny. No one can accuse you of that or babbling idiot, pretty smart!
Don’t you imagine someone as smart as McCain thinks these libs are the biggest fools ever born, and must be in amazement that any of them can even cross the street. I don’t see how they make it from day to day. Well obviously they haven’t with their fatal Form of Insanity.
September 1, 2008 - 07:26 AM on September 1st, 2008
Oh, Lenny climbed out from under his rock, too? Hey, get some sunshine boy! Obama is just a pandering, empty-suit Socialist who hates America. Did I mention, Obama isn’t even a citizen, else why not provide a certified birth certificate?
September 1, 2008 - 10:19 AM on September 1st, 2008
carolyne thanks for the compliment. When I watched the display of the Democrite convention, with all of its symbolism portraying Obama as Messiah and all of the utter nonsense and BS, I was amazed that so many people in this Country, Americans, can watch that and want to identify with it. There are always a core group of people that will join any nutball cause, like the many cults we have had. But to think that about half of voting Americans will eagerly fall for such utter nonsense?
As a Conservative, to me McCain has many limitations. He gives me about 40% of what I am looking for in a President. He was never my first choice; I supported George Allen initially then Fred Thompson. But now that the Democrites have presented another candidate that must not, can not be allowed to win, I am voting for McCain. But I do so with eyes wide open, realizing that once again there are tradeoffs and that we are going to have to remain vigilant if McCain wins to keep him as close to Conservative side as possible. That’s why his choice of Sarah Palin was such an excellent one; she’s a solid Conservative. If McCain became incapacitated while in office I would be perfectly okay with her as President.
The Democrites, on the other hand, think they have discovered something new in Obama the Community Organizer. His populist rhetoric, no matter how cliched, sends them into a state of Nirvana as though they are experiencing the rapture. There was aboslutely nothing new in anything Obama said; it was still the same class-envy crap the Democrites have trotted out for years, interleaved with utter fictional nonsense. The only time any of it sounded good was when Obama borrowed from Conservative core values, such as when he stated that “We believe that by working hard you can get ahead in America” which is a lie because we know that Democrites punish the hard work and success and instead steal from those who produce wealth to give to those who produce nothing in order to buy their support and votes as they dwell on the Democrite Virtual Plantation.
Here’s my content analysis of Osama Obama’s acceptance speech:
45% Same old tired Democrite Playbook nonsense
35% Populist rhetoric, cliched
10% Conservative core values, sprinkled in to sound good and add Gravitas, but absolutely contrary to what Democrites actually believe and do.
10% Pandering absolute BS, such as his pledge to fight the Global Warming that human activity never caused and probably does not exist anyway, but sounds wonderful to idiots.
And unfortunately, there are way too many idiots like Lenny. They love this stuff; by simply lapping it up they feel sooo good and never have to think for themselves. They believe Osama Obama the New Messiah will ride into DC in his chariot, or descend from Olympus, and we will enter the long-awaited Age of Aquarius.
They are a large part of what’s wrong with America.

Yea, PCD why not, is right! Liar, Liar, pants on firer that is Obama and he’ll get discovered under his rock. No Hope for him. Put a woman like Palin on the job and she’ll get’er done! Palin looks sweet and is, but don’t make her mad. She’s going to make things come up short and sweet! YEA - vote McCain/Palin a true win/win. Yes there is a miraculous God in Christ. I am grateful. Also grateful Gustav headed southwest. God provides!
We (believers) need to pray these tropical storms stay on the water and become weak as water like the Demorats.
No Worries McCain/Palin will water them down to nothing, and wash them away out to the sea of defeat!

Yes, and ditto Robert - well put. I could not explain it as well and glad you drew the line in the sand so clear. I trust McCain/Palin and see McCain completing his task (journey) as a job well done then Palin right behind him for another four years.
This will get America back up and on it feet to be able to stay strong and defeat the enemy like Obama the Socialist/Marxist/Elitist/Racist that he is among other things. I am glad, Hitllary lost big time plus it opened the door for the Right Woman, and ole Botox Pelosi will go down as well, THANK GOD A HUNDRED TIMES OVER. The Demorats fell into their own trap door, shut & locked it forever. I bind the evil cult liberals away from America and loose the Power of God on our Nation in the Powerful name of Jesus Christ. It’s our right (a given) and authority in Christ. I plan to use it, and God help (no one) that gets in my way! You all have a get right day, and TraveLight!
Same to McCain/Palin and God Bless you and America in Christ. Have you noticed:
Palin holds her mouth Right. McCain got it Right this time. Good for him.

Hey Lisa,
Obama’s afraid to go on O’Reilly?
Last I checked, he just did a long interview with him.
Meanwhile, McCain threw a little hissy fit and refused to do an interview with Larry “The Big Softballer” King.
If pouty little McCain can’t handle CNN, how’s he expected to deal with foreign leaders and international crises?
And for those of you characterizing Obama’s speech as “tired nonsense,” how did you make it through McCain’s lead balloon last night? We already know he was a POW. But what’s he going to do to fix the country? After three nights of a Republican convention, we still don’t know. All we heard were childish insults. In his speech, Obama defined “change.” McCain’s now the one coming across as an empty suit, repeating “change” but not providing substance. And you Republican sheep still toe the line.
I can’t until Nov. 4! Palin will be sent packing back to Alaska, and McCain will return bitterly to his Senate office. And the nation will breathe a sigh of relief that we’ll finally have competent, intelligent leadership.

How convenient that you should show up Lemmy. He has done one interview and it needed preconditions prior to acceptance.
McCain refused to do an interview? Why was that? How many has he done with CNN and Larry in particular? I’ll give you a hint, it outnumbers the amount of finger and toes you have.
Do you have a learning comprehension problem? Did you listen to McCain’s speech? I heard the plans on employment and retraining, I heard about education along with the problems and the solutions, I heard about energy, the problems and the solutions..It looks like you heard what someone said Obama said about the speech.
September 5, 2008 - 03:39 PM on September 5th, 2008
I watched the whole speech, as tough as it was to sit through given how disconnected and uninspired it was. Each of the topics you mention was given a mention — but that’s it. McCain would acknowledge a problem (a good first step), then say he was going to fix it. And seldom elaborated beyond that. As you say, he addressed “problems and solutions,” but simply pointed to problems and made vague gestures toward solutions. And then continued to talk about his POW experience, which everyone from here to the moon knows about by now.
And it’s not just me who felt this way. Even GOP sympathizers in the mainstream media came to the same conclusion.
Now I realize that big speeches aren’t the appropriate venue for detailed policy proposals (you can find Obama’s in a .pdf file on his website, in case you’re interested). But how come when Obama speaks in broad strokes about policy, you all cry “Empty suit! No details!,” but when McCain offers mere generalities (and, you have to admit, fewer details than Obama did in his acceptance speech), you cast him as a policy-oriented statesman? I’ll wait for an answer to that one.
Why did McCain cancel his Larry King interview? Because a journalist dared challenge one of his operatives to stop the spin and deflection and provide one example of Palin’s executive decision-making. Isn’t that what journalists are supposed to do? This wasn’t about her family or anything personal, but about her credentials. Or would you rather that journalists only swallow campaign spin? Besides, McCain created this situation by not properly vetting his VP pick (unless you believe the campaign’s spin on that too), probably counting on the media — which he once referred to as his “base” — to just give him and his pick a free pass. But when they did their job by asking relevant questions about qualifications and experience (which all Americans, regardless of party, should be concerned about), he flipped out and had a little pouty fit and canceled the interview. Doesn’t sound very Presidential to me.

I have a question for you or anyone else who wants to address this: I know of several folks who have decided to stop contributing to their 401k’s and other retirement accounts and start putting that money towards paying down their mortgage. Right now I put $250/paycheck into my retirement fund, and yet my balance is less than it was six months ago. Is it smarter to just keep with the traditional wisdom of investing the same amount no matter how the market is going, or is a diversion into debt reduction a smart move? FYI I’m about 15 miles out from retirement.
What do you think?

UNFASH,
Paying down the mortgage is a good idea, but is it necessary? 15 years is still quite a long time and there is plenty of time for that account to go up. I am riding the market out, just as I have in the past. I would suggest you sit down with a money manager, yes it might cost you some money, but it may well be worth the investment. Get the account representative for your 401K involved. Yes, even if it is handled by your employer, you have access to a manager that can assist you in the long term strategy of your investments. You may need to move some stuff around, or take a whole new approach to the account set up.
The last thing I would do is panic.

It’s also a good time for anyone who may have extra cash to buy into the market. As long as you can stay in it for the long haul things will be fine.
