It's also a good time for anyone who may have extra cash to buy into the market. As long as you can stay in it for the long haul things will be fine.

UNFASH,

Paying down the mortgage is a good idea, but is it necessary? 15 years is still quite a long time and there is plenty of time for that account to go up. I am riding the market out, just as I have in the past. I would suggest you sit down with a money manager, yes it might cost you some money, but it may well be worth the investment. Get the account representative for your 401K involved. Yes, even if it is handled by your employer, you have access to a manager that can assist you in the long term strategy of your investments. You may need to move some stuff around, or take a whole new approach to the account set up.

The last thing I would do is panic.

I have a question for you or anyone else who wants to address this: I know of several folks who have decided to stop contributing to their 401k's and other retirement accounts and start putting that money towards paying down their mortgage. Right now I put $250/paycheck into my retirement fund, and yet my balance is less than it was six months ago. Is it smarter to just keep with the traditional wisdom of investing the same amount no matter how the market is going, or is a diversion into debt reduction a smart move? FYI I'm about 15 miles out from retirement.
What do you think?

I watched the whole speech, as tough as it was to sit through given how disconnected and uninspired it was. Each of the topics you mention was given a mention -- but that's it. McCain would acknowledge a problem (a good first step), then say he was going to fix it. And seldom elaborated beyond that. As you say, he addressed "problems and solutions," but simply pointed to problems and made vague gestures toward solutions. And then continued to talk about his POW experience, which everyone from here to the moon knows about by now.

And it's not just me who felt this way. Even GOP sympathizers in the mainstream media came to the same conclusion.

Now I realize that big speeches aren't the appropriate venue for detailed policy proposals (you can find Obama's in a .pdf file on his website, in case you're interested). But how come when Obama speaks in broad strokes about policy, you all cry "Empty suit! No details!," but when McCain offers mere generalities (and, you have to admit, fewer details than Obama did in his acceptance speech), you cast him as a policy-oriented statesman? I'll wait for an answer to that one.

Why did McCain cancel his Larry King interview? Because a journalist dared challenge one of his operatives to stop the spin and deflection and provide one example of Palin's executive decision-making. Isn't that what journalists are supposed to do? This wasn't about her family or anything personal, but about her credentials. Or would you rather that journalists only swallow campaign spin? Besides, McCain created this situation by not properly vetting his VP pick (unless you believe the campaign's spin on that too), probably counting on the media -- which he once referred to as his "base" -- to just give him and his pick a free pass. But when they did their job by asking relevant questions about qualifications and experience (which all Americans, regardless of party, should be concerned about), he flipped out and had a little pouty fit and canceled the interview. Doesn't sound very Presidential to me.

How convenient that you should show up Lemmy. He has done one interview and it needed preconditions prior to acceptance.

McCain refused to do an interview? Why was that? How many has he done with CNN and Larry in particular? I'll give you a hint, it outnumbers the amount of finger and toes you have.

Do you have a learning comprehension problem? Did you listen to McCain's speech? I heard the plans on employment and retraining, I heard about education along with the problems and the solutions, I heard about energy, the problems and the solutions..It looks like you heard what someone said Obama said about the speech.

Hey Lisa,

Obama's afraid to go on O'Reilly?

Last I checked, he just did a long interview with him.

Meanwhile, McCain threw a little hissy fit and refused to do an interview with Larry "The Big Softballer" King.

If pouty little McCain can't handle CNN, how's he expected to deal with foreign leaders and international crises?

And for those of you characterizing Obama's speech as "tired nonsense," how did you make it through McCain's lead balloon last night? We already know he was a POW. But what's he going to do to fix the country? After three nights of a Republican convention, we still don't know. All we heard were childish insults. In his speech, Obama defined "change." McCain's now the one coming across as an empty suit, repeating "change" but not providing substance. And you Republican sheep still toe the line.

I can't until Nov. 4! Palin will be sent packing back to Alaska, and McCain will return bitterly to his Senate office. And the nation will breathe a sigh of relief that we'll finally have competent, intelligent leadership.

Yes, and ditto Robert - well put. I could not explain it as well and glad you drew the line in the sand so clear. I trust McCain/Palin and see McCain completing his task (journey) as a job well done then Palin right behind him for another four years.

This will get America back up and on it feet to be able to stay strong and defeat the enemy like Obama the Socialist/Marxist/Elitist/Racist that he is among other things. I am glad, Hitllary lost big time plus it opened the door for the Right Woman, and ole Botox Pelosi will go down as well, THANK GOD A HUNDRED TIMES OVER. The Demorats fell into their own trap door, shut & locked it forever. I bind the evil cult liberals away from America and loose the Power of God on our Nation in the Powerful name of Jesus Christ. It's our right (a given) and authority in Christ. I plan to use it, and God help (no one) that gets in my way! You all have a get right day, and TraveLight!

Same to McCain/Palin and God Bless you and America in Christ. Have you noticed:
Palin holds her mouth Right. McCain got it Right this time. Good for him.

Yea, PCD why not, is right! Liar, Liar, pants on firer that is Obama and he'll get discovered under his rock. No Hope for him. Put a woman like Palin on the job and she'll get'er done! Palin looks sweet and is, but don't make her mad. She's going to make things come up short and sweet! YEA - vote McCain/Palin a true win/win. Yes there is a miraculous God in Christ. I am grateful. Also grateful Gustav headed southwest. God provides!
We (believers) need to pray these tropical storms stay on the water and become weak as water like the Demorats.
No Worries McCain/Palin will water them down to nothing, and wash them away out to the sea of defeat!

carolyne thanks for the compliment. When I watched the display of the Democrite convention, with all of its symbolism portraying Obama as Messiah and all of the utter nonsense and BS, I was amazed that so many people in this Country, Americans, can watch that and want to identify with it. There are always a core group of people that will join any nutball cause, like the many cults we have had. But to think that about half of voting Americans will eagerly fall for such utter nonsense?

As a Conservative, to me McCain has many limitations. He gives me about 40% of what I am looking for in a President. He was never my first choice; I supported George Allen initially then Fred Thompson. But now that the Democrites have presented another candidate that must not, can not be allowed to win, I am voting for McCain. But I do so with eyes wide open, realizing that once again there are tradeoffs and that we are going to have to remain vigilant if McCain wins to keep him as close to Conservative side as possible. That's why his choice of Sarah Palin was such an excellent one; she's a solid Conservative. If McCain became incapacitated while in office I would be perfectly okay with her as President.

The Democrites, on the other hand, think they have discovered something new in Obama the Community Organizer. His populist rhetoric, no matter how cliched, sends them into a state of Nirvana as though they are experiencing the rapture. There was aboslutely nothing new in anything Obama said; it was still the same class-envy crap the Democrites have trotted out for years, interleaved with utter fictional nonsense. The only time any of it sounded good was when Obama borrowed from Conservative core values, such as when he stated that "We believe that by working hard you can get ahead in America" which is a lie because we know that Democrites punish the hard work and success and instead steal from those who produce wealth to give to those who produce nothing in order to buy their support and votes as they dwell on the Democrite Virtual Plantation.

Here's my content analysis of Osama Obama's acceptance speech:

45% Same old tired Democrite Playbook nonsense
35% Populist rhetoric, cliched
10% Conservative core values, sprinkled in to sound good and add Gravitas, but absolutely contrary to what Democrites actually believe and do.
10% Pandering absolute BS, such as his pledge to fight the Global Warming that human activity never caused and probably does not exist anyway, but sounds wonderful to idiots.

And unfortunately, there are way too many idiots like Lenny. They love this stuff; by simply lapping it up they feel sooo good and never have to think for themselves. They believe Osama Obama the New Messiah will ride into DC in his chariot, or descend from Olympus, and we will enter the long-awaited Age of Aquarius.

They are a large part of what's wrong with America.
