So paying higher taxes is patriotic, and if you balk at that, you are selfish
“The point is, though, that ” and it’s not just charity, it’s not just that I want to help the middle class and working people who are trying to get in the middle class ” it’s that when we actually make sure that everybody’s got a shot – when young people can all go to college, when everybody’s got decent health care, when everybody’s got a little more money at the end of the month – then guess what? Everybody starts spending that money, they decide maybe I can afford a new car, maybe I can afford a computer for my child. They can buy the products and services that businesses are selling and everybody is better off. All boats rise. That’s what happened in the 1990s, that’s what we need to restore. And that’s what I’m gonna do as president of the United States of America.
“John McCain and Sarah Palin they call this socialistic,” Obama continued. “You know I don’t know when, when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness.”
Everybody does have a shot, but everybody doesn’t follow the same path.
Maybe Obama and his running mate could try spreading some of their own wealth around first. My wife and I make far less than Joe Biden, but we on average give more to charity per year than the presumably un-selfish Democrat vice presidential candidate.
Obama is also ignoring the fact that overall, those in ‘red states’ (the bitter, clinging, selfish ones) give more to charity on average than those in blue. We’re not ‘selfish,’ Senator. We would like to be the ones who choose where our hard-earned cash goes rather than leave that decision in the hands of you, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
Ed:
This reveals the basic underlying philosophy of the Left – that one cannot possibly be charitable unless they use the government to redirect their funds. Obama assumes that people who don’t want to pay higher taxes are somehow “selfish”, but that’s only true if one assumes that the so-called rich won’t do anything else with their money except sit around like Scrooge McDuck, counting it constantly. Most people today invest it, which creates jobs, or spend it, which creates even more jobs, or donate it to charity ” which works much more effectively and with much less overhead than filtering it through government bureaucracy.
Those who earn the money want to direct it in the manner they see fit, in the most efficient manner possible. That’s not selfish, it’s just common sense. Only someone in love with government power could see it as anything else.

I’m in the process of starting my own business. Does he mean he’s going to take the money I earn, and give it to someone who doesn’t want to go out and make a living for themselves?
That kind of contradicts the socialist plan, doesn’t it? Population control.
He would have to set up execution for all the middle class and poor because they are taking resources away from the rich. What a plan to control the population. First, convince them he’s the one to save them from their poverty, then execute them like he does babies.
Give McCain the states of North Carolina and Missouri (tied and McCain will win these). Also give McCain undecided states: Indiana, Idaho, South Dakota, and Maryland (there is no poll data for these). Then all McCain needs to do is win Florida (31 votes) and he is our new President.
McCain will win this election and the Media does not like that at all.
That’s why the emphasis on selected polls. Report the facts, not skewed numbers.

I WISH MY HUSBAND AND I HAD A JOB SO WE COULD PAY TAXES. MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR NINE MONTHS AND I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND A JOB FOR SEVERAL MONTHS ALSO.
I WOULD LOVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PAY HIGHER TAXES!
All of the numbers are skewed to demoralize the McCain supporters. Of course the Obamanoids are already screaming that the only way McCain can win is if he cheats. Funny how its not a Republican Sec of State that tried to deny requests for mail in ballots, or refuse to release a list of over 200,000 unverifiable voter registrations to the county election boards so that the unverified registrants could be challenged to prove their name and address. That was a DEMOCRAT. Not to mention that there weren’t hundreds of dead Republicans voting in the primaries in Houston this spring. All of the DEAD voters were casting ballots in the Democratic primaries. (I’m NOT kidding about that either folks. Some people were REALLY MIFFED when they found out someone was using their dead relative’s name to vote.)
The liberal demacrtas only want more tax hikes to pay for their pork projects especialy for illegal aliens and the global warming fruad:x
Rand’s uses a concept of rational selfishness that respects the rights of others (as opposed to the notion of some “selfish” thief).
Still, it is not just Obama who criticizes such selfishness; virtually every religion does the same. Even McCain says “Country First”.
The way I see it, everyone in the mainstream, whether GOP or Democrat, think that people must live for others. The differences between the main parties tend to be about: in what areas must people give of themselves, and to what degree.
The country needs to put aside the creed of altruism if it is to succeed.
