Democrats Don’t Hit 60: Republican wins GA Senate runoff; Blocks Dem super-majority…

By: Pam On: Dec/3/08 - 1 Comment

Hope and change just got tested!

Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss beat back a prolonged challenge from Democrat Jim Martin on Tuesday to win a second term in office after a bruising four-week runoff between the one-time University of Georgia fraternity brothers.

Chambliss’s double-digit victory dashed Democrats’ dreams of securing a filibuster-proof, 60-vote “super majority” in the Senate and buoyed a Republican Party battered by staggering losses in the Nov. 4 general election.

Is everyone clear on this? Chambliss’ victory thwarted Democrats’ hopes of winning a 60 seat filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

Turnout was light throughout the state Tuesday. A spokesman for Secretary of State Karen Handel predicted between 18 and 20 percent of the state’s 5.75 million registered voters would cast ballots – far less than the 65 percent who voted in last month’s general election.

Maybe Hopenchange should have campaigned for Martin!

Yet Obama has been ambivalent about meddling in the race. He has recorded a radio ad and robocalls on Martin’s behalf, but has shied away from a more visible role: he has yet to appear in a television ad or appear with Martin at an event, even as Georgia Democrats have begged him to do so.

“Bill Clinton made no great boast of being bipartisan, of having a new approach to politics,” said Fowler. “Obama has made it clear he intends to govern in a bipartisan fashion . . . The public might interpret his going down to campaign in a very partisan run-off as forsaking his pledge to be bipartisan.”

No, Obama got what he wanted,…It’s all about the One!
