While I clearly understand why many people are upset about Bill Ayers coming to FSU, there is nothing the university can do about it without becoming entangled in a law suit. The funds for the event are allocated by the Student Government Association from funds collected through a student activity fee. As such, these funds are subject to Supreme Court ruling in Southworth vs. the University of Wisconsin. This court ruling requires the allocation of these funds to be allocated on a viewpoint-neutral basis. In otherwords, the viewpoint of a speaker cannot be considered. Now of course, in this situation, Bill Ayers is no doubt a terrorist, however, because the government botched the case against him by obtaining all the evidence illegally, he is not in jail and was never convicted. For purposes of deciding to fund or not fund, his acts cannot be considered as he was never convicted. Even if he was convicted, the ruling in Southworth does not specify wether a speaker can be prohibited due to criminal activity.

Ashley is 100% correct, this is student money and not state money. And if you are arguing that the money should be going towards paying student tuition.... it already has. Do you want to use it again? I know you're an aged soul Pam, but you do remember student organizations from when you were in college, right?

No Ashley, it isn't condescending, it is the truth. I base that on your lack of knowledge..

Why the hell would I be mad at the Bill Of Rights? It is the FBI that screwed up, not the Constitution...Had the FBI done their job properly, Ayers would be an aged hippy sitting in a federal prison. The wire taps were ruled illegal, therefore getting him and his equally evil wife off on a technicality.

You might want to spend some time learning to do research, because you are by far, one of the most ignorant people that has popped in! You have no idea what the truth is, nor do you have any idea about the subject matter..

Don't you think little girl is a bit condescending? Appealing to discredit the speaker is an awesome rhetorical flair, but really does nothing to support your argument (especially because you don't know my age, and neither does anybody else). I find when people get heated, they do things to discredit the person and not their argument.

The FBI did do their job, but unfortunately COINTELPRO just so happened to be illegal. : You should be angry at our god damned bill of rights!

I'm not challenging preconceived notions here, I'm doing it on my campus. I just popped into challenge your specific misinformation about his funding then was distracted by more misinformation that just kept coming down the pipe. I apologize.

No Ashley, people your age didn't know him, don't mistake that ignorance for those of us over the age of 40..We all know who he is, what he did and what he is all about..

When you grow up little girl you will realize that this is not fear, it is called anger. Anger at the FBI for not doing their jobs properly to assure that this man spent the rest of his days in prison..
Anger that the man is able to shout :Ayers: “Guilty as sin, free as a bird, it’s a great country”.

Anger that:Eric Holder, Who Was Deeply Involved In Pardons Of Two Weather Underground Terrorists and Marx Rich, Is On Obama’s Veep Search Committee UPDATE: Let’s Look At Jim Johnson, the former Fannie Mae chief

Anger:Alert: The Chicago Annenberg Challenge/Obama/Ayers/ Daley Records Cover-up

You are not capable of challenging any preconceived notions based on this thread alone..You mistake an award given by a group of his peers, many that belonged to the same radical groups that he did, with success in his field. We have already seen his reform to ba a failure based on the independent review of the work.

When you grow up little girl, maybe you will be able to discuss a subject intelligently and you will be able to actually understand all sides of an issue...

Maybe you kids can greet him as he greeted everyone while a student at the University of Michigan...All of you should shout out "Fuck you mother fucker"...He seemed to like that and thought it was a nice way to greet people!

5k is going to go a long way in reigniting campus conversation about him. We're starting a dialogue, challenging preconceived notions shaped by a political campaign (Most people didn't know who Ayers was before Palin mentioned him), talking about the use of property destruction for political ends, starting a community wide conversation about what happened in the 60s and using a persons controversial nature to talk about problems in education that this man has been given awards for helping to fix. Just saying "Bill Ayers" has brought about these conversations.

We're using controversy to help bring about good and we're making a largely disaffected campus curious. The worst thing this man can do is talk about education reform. What are you afraid of?

Ashley is correct, I was opposed to bringing Ayers to FSU with student funds. But the money is theirs, it does not come from the lotto, or alumni contributions or state funds. There is a nine dollar fee for all students that pays for free access to sporting events, concerts and speakers. This year we had Michelle Malkin speak about why "Liberals are Hypocates" and two years ago we spent 40 thousand on Anne Culture who completly bashed liberals.
I'm a strong libetarian and I do believe they have the right to bring a left-wing radical to speak about education if they want.
It is their right in a free country to do so as a independent student group, I know the University itself has nothing to do with Ayers so I still support FSU fully, they have no power to stop Ayers so any protesting is futile.
They have their right to speak in our free country

Gee Ashley, thanks for the wiki info, but lets stick to the facts:

The joint effort between Barack Obama and terrorist William Ayers to “reform” Chicago schools was a flop. After spending $160 million, Chicago’s children were still being left behind

Where did the Annenberg Money Go? Obama funded extremist Afrocentrists who shared Rev. Wright’s anti-Americanism

When all was said and done, the had $160 million, and operated in 210 schools throughout Chicago between 1996 and 2001. Here is what the report concluded on the bang up job done by these two idiots and their partners in crime:

On page 14 of the executive summary we find that “the Challenge had little impact on student outcomes.” On page 15, the report says: “There were no statistically significant differences between Annenberg schools and non-Annenberg schools in rates of achievement gain” and that “any improvements were much like those occurring in demographically similar non-Annenberg schools.”

In 1998-99, just 36% of the Annenberg school students in grades three through eight were reading at or above national norms compared with 35% in Chicago schools citywide. In math, the results were similar. Some 43% of Annenberg students were at or above national norms versus 42% for non-Annenberg students.

High school graduation rates for both groups of students were the same at 40%. The Annenberg schools edged out Chicago schools in dropout rates ” 35% to 36%. As the report said, there were no signs of improvement that warranted the expenditure of $160 million.

The CAC did not improve the schools, and in some ways made things worse. The executive summary also notes: “Classroom behavior, students’ sense of self-efficacy, and social competence were weaker in 2001 than before the Challenge.”

The report stated: “In 2001, students in Annenberg schools were somewhat less inclined than in 1994 to respect each other, work well together and help each other learn.” Neither student attitudes nor student achievements were aided by Obama’s efforts.

It gets better:

When Obama collected the endorsement of the American Federation of Teachers, he told the teachers that support for alternatives to the education monopoly amounted to “tired rhetoric about vouchers and school choice” even though efforts like the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship, unlike those of the CAC, have produced stunning improvements.

Not being left behind are Obama’s daughters, who attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. There the tuition ranges from $15,528 for kindergarten to $20,445 for high school. When asked about it during last year’s YouTube debate, Sen. Obama responded that it was “the best option” for his children.

They had a choice Obama would deny others.
