If Obama Has A $30 Million Campaign Surplus, Why Is His Team Soliciting Funds To Retire $7.5 million Of Hillary’s Debt?

By: Pam On: Dec/6/08 - 28 Comments

Obama Urges Donors to Ease Clinton Campaign Debt, Biden Asks Donors to Help Clinton Retire Debt, Obama Helping to Bail Hillary Out of Her Campaign Debt Before She Becomes Secretary of State, all three articles carry the same message:  Hillary is in debt to the tune of $7.5 million, of which $5.3 million is owed to  Clinton’s controversial strategist, Mark Penn.  All three articles fail to mention that Obama has a surplus of $30 million, which he can legally give her.

This president-elect is the most active in American history.  There are no public funds set aside to pay for the activities his transition team and the current administration has proven that it is simply waiting to die.  I am assuming that if you have a problem with the request for donations then you will not be donating.  Kindly mind you own business and allow these very important people settle their debts and get to work.  I am actually looking forward to listening to all of this petty criticism for the next four years.

Who cares? It’s not tax dollars, if he asks and we give (or not give) it’s nobodies business right?

I thought federal election laws do not allow funds raised by one candidate to be used by another?

You might want to look at the actual law Pablo..it is quite different from what you think.

I like the Clintons and I will like Hillary to be able to retire her debt. But, I don’t agree that Obama can legally give her the money that people donated for a different purpose (Obama campaigns) to be used to retired someone’s debt. If Obama did, I think he is playing with fire. Donors usually donate for a specific purpose, and they will not appreciate their money being used for something or someone else.

Well K.Ade, he can legally do this..he can give the $30 million to charity if he wants.

I DONT THINK IT IS MORALLY OR ETHICALLY JUSTIFY TO GIVE AWAY  MONEY DONATED FOR A SPECIFIC MISSION, IN TO RETIRING SOMEONE’S ELSE DEBT.SO OBAMA SHOULD NOT, BUT CAN APPEAL TO ALL DEMOCRATS TO DONATE AND HELP HILARY CLEAR HER DEBT…

Why does Hilary need any bailout.  Bill Clinton has lots and lots of money.  Use some of that.

*sigh* Must be a slow news day?
People, if you don’t want him asking you for money, just click on the part of the email that says ‘do not contact me.’
I think it’s funny though for anyone to presume what he must spend his own war chest on, or what he can ask for money for, OR how many different purposes I’m entitled to give him money for. The rules of how much can be given are in regards to the election..

To me. if Obama has to pay off Hillary over $7 million, what is he buying or buying off?  The Clintons have more than enough wealth to service their own debts.  Why do we have to keep putting up with all these politicians who want the public to pay for all their foibles?  These people have great egos, believing we, the people of this nation owe all of them great wealth for them to spend as they please.  They expect to be paid for everything they do.  Their Federal Salaries are like an inconsequential tip for being in their elected office.  Great wealth at the public trough is their expectation.  We tend to donate money to politicians because we either believe in their alleged policies or we are trying to buy favor with them.  Do you really see the economics of spending over hundreds of millions of dollars for a job that pays $500,000 a year.  Clinton, I don’t think spent quite that much but then his salary was not that much either.  But they are spending money usually donated by people who rightly or wrongly believe in them or by people wanting to buy favors from the candidate (if you contribute enough.)  I think Hillary has enough friends or supporters to pay her debts or she needs to dip into the family coffers.  For us in the public, paying for all this, its tough luck, too bad if we incur our own debts.  Then again, in this new age, Obama might bail out all of us citizens and visitors to this great Nation.  But who will bail out the people paying for the bail out!

    Joel,

I think we are on the same page…The public has already been asked to donate to all the candidates..Obama has a surplus, and instead of using his own funds to pay the $7Million, leaving him $23Million, he goes to the public..as this is happening, there are other Democrats screaming poverty and he won’t help them..Let’s not forget that the man broke the law as he was breaking the record for most money raised..

If she could not make enough money, so why she spsent so much? and is it justified that she get  bailed out when she and her husband have much much more money than her debt? I’m confused.

What law did Obama break? By foregoing the government money, he had the right to raise all that money. If you know of another law that he’s broken, make the case. There is a government body in place to tackle that sort of stuff, and I haven’t seen where they feel that way.

I think some people are scared of the power the man has. That’s ok to say if you’re on the other side. I certainly would be.

I have no doubt that he’ll raise both easily (his transition money and her debt) and that means that Americans are giving the money of their own free will because they want them to get to work and not worry about the operations of an election past. Good stuff!

Boy if THIS is controversial, it’s going to be a wild ride, lol.

=)) Boy I had never heard of ‘right voices’ before today, but they (you?) really seem to be on the ball.. I wonder how the REAL media seemed to have missed these stories. Or is it just that these are the usual kind of ‘hard to stop ANYONE from donating to you that wants to’ BS that dogs every political campaign. I thought you meant that he broke an actual law not just that some (admittedly) probably hundreds of donations that other people made to him were unlawful. That’s always the case.

Here’s where you can report him.. I care not, lol.

I think that Obama has been truly kind in giving Mrs. Clinton a secretary of state position. They where political rivals, Plus Bill Clinton has made 100 million dollars-Let her pay for her own loss.
The rest of us have to.

Obama said he would pay Hilary dept in exchange if she would  help him get elected. Hillary and John McCain did good on what money the party gave them at the time. John McCain only at 74 mill up against Obama 500 million plus, now he only got 30 million?  He spent over  470,000,000   million dollars, in less than a year… Well,  we are in big trouble when he get into office. With the big three; Harry Reed and Nancy, and Obama, america will be in dept and double digit interest rates, just like the Carter years, to pay back the bail out/Rescue plan.

I was a small donor to President Elect Obama’s campaign and I would not want Mr. Obama to use his funds, nor would I contribute to her debt, because as I recall at least two Democrats (Senators Reid and Dodd) made a public request for Hillary to drop out of the race and she bull- headedly continued, running up her debt. So if her 17 million supporters want to help retire her debt it is fine. Otherwise, let her pay it herself.
