“We have swept away Hitlerism, but a great many Europeans feel that the cure has been worse than the disease.”

I used that quote as an intro because David Stafford of the WaPo does a comparative analysis of Iraq and post-war Germany. The question asked:

So what did the United States do right 60 years ago that it has — so far — failed to accomplish in Iraq since the iconic toppling of Saddam Hussein’s statue in Baghdad and Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” declaration aboard a U.S. carrier on May 1, 2003?

One thing to keep in mind is that we did not end the full military occupation in Germany until 10 years after we declared victory.

H/T to LGF for this gem:

Following the violent death of a Moroccan teenager in Cologne, hundreds of immigrants have taken to the streets in nightly demonstrations to protest what they see as evidence of their second-class status in Germany. Police warn the city could be ready to explode.

The owner of an electronics shop on Cologne’s Kalker Hauptstrasse had rolled down the shutters on the windows in case there was unrest. Now they have photos of a 17-year-old Moroccan boy taped to them. The teenager, whose name was Salih, was killed in front of the shop two weeks ago.

The sidewalk is a sea of candles as hundreds of people chant: “Salih! Salih! We want justice!” They feel that Salih was one of them — a youth from an immigrant family.

That is roughly 6% of the Muslim population in Germany.

According to the study:

H/T to LGF:

  • 40 percent of Muslims surveyed had a “fundamentalist orientation,” which the authors defined as a strongly religious worldview and moral values.
  • Around 6 percent of those surveyed were classified as having “violent tendencies,”
  • 14 percent of respondents had “anti-democratic” tendencies.
  • Around 12 percent of the Muslims in Germany identified with a religious-moral critique of the West and supported corporal punishment and the death penalty.
  • religious beliefs are becoming increasingly important for young people.

Three terror suspects held in Germany planned to carry out “imminent” and “massive” bombs attacks on a U.S. air base and Frankfurt’s international airport.

The suspects, two Germans aged 22 and 29 and a 29-year-old Turk, received terrorist training in Pakistan and had close ties to al Qaeda, according to Jorg Ziercke, president of Germany’s Federal Criminal Investigation Office.

Ziercke said the group was united by a “hatred against American citizens” as it planned attacks against Frankfurt airport, a popular international travel hub, and Ramstein air base, a major transit point for the U.S. military into the Middle East and Central Asia.

Allahpundit predicts that this is related to the Copenhagen arrests.

But I Thought France And Germany Hated Us?!?!?!

Little ado was made this week about France’s new Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner’s trip to Iraq. While in office, Chirac did everything in his power to destroy the relationship that our two countries had. At one point, when Chirac attempted to forge an anti-American triple alliance. Nicolas Sarkozy has made it his mission to repair the fractured relationship France has with the USA and our forty allies that went into Iraq.

Kouchner’s visit, full of symbolism, shatters one of the key points in Al Qaida’s analysis: that the Western powers will never find enough unity to develop a common strategy against terror.

At one point, when Chirac invited German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Russian President Vladimir Putin to a gathering to forge an anti-American triple alliance, Al Qaida’s analysis appeared to have some basis in reality.

(h/t to HotAir) What will Matthias say about this:

Booklets from a subsidiary of the German government’s Ministry for Family Affairs encourage parents to sexually massage their children as young as 1 to 3 years of age. Two 40-page booklets entitled “Love, Body and Playing Doctor” by the German Federal Health Education Center (Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung - BZgA) are aimed at parents - the first addressing children from 1-3 and the other children from 4-6 years of age.
“Fathers do not devote enough attention to the clitoris and vagina of their daughters. Their caresses too seldom pertain to these regions, while this is the only way the girls can develop a sense of pride in their sex,” reads the booklet regarding 1-3 year olds. The authors rationalize, “The child touches all parts of their father’s body, sometimes arousing him. The father should do the same.”…The pamphlet advises parents to permit young children “unlimited masturbation” except where physical injury becomes apparent. It advises: “Children should learn that there is no such thing as shameful parts of the body. The body is a home, which you should be proud of.” For ages 4-6, the booklet recommends teaching children the movements of copulation.
Another product of the BZgA is a song book aimed at children of four and slightly older which includes several songs espousing masturbation. The song-book entitled “Nose, belly and bum” includes one song with the following lyrics: “When I touch my body, I discover what I have. I have a vagina, because I am a girl. Vagina is not only for peeing. When I touch it, I feel a pleasant tingle.”

Germany has erupted in a rancorous dispute over how to deal with a terrorist threat

    NYT’s

Sensing a growing threat, Germany’s top security official, Wolfgang Schäuble, is breaking down resistance within the government to surreptitious online searches of computers belonging to people they deem suspicious. He is pushing for a law to allow security forces to shoot down a plane commandeered by hijackers. And he said this week that Germany should consider detaining potential terrorists and approving the killing of terrorist leaders abroad.

The debate also comes at a time of rising tension within Germany’s large, mostly Turkish, Muslim population. On Thursday, four major Turkish groups boycotted an annual meeting on integration held by Mrs. Merkel, to protest the recent tightening of German immigration laws.

Given the growing concerns, several experts here said, it is time for Germany to re-evaluate the balance between personal liberties and collective security in its counterterrorism policy.

Palestinian Authority officials have accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel of “offending the Palestinians’ feelings”

    Good for her!

Palestinian Authority officials have accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel of “offending the Palestinians’ feelings” during her visit earlier this week to Ramallah, where she met with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

The accusations, the first of their kind against a European leader, were made by top PA officials only hours after Merkel and her entourage left Ramallah on Monday. “She did everything to provoke the Palestinians during her visit,” said one official. “She showed no understanding for the plight of our people. On the other hand, she appeared to be very biased toward Israel.”

The official claimed that while Merkel refused to meet with families of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, she focused during her talks with Abbas on the need to release kidnapped IDF Cpl. Gilad Schalit, who has been held in the Gaza Strip since last June. In addition, he noted, Merkel met with the families of missing IDF soldiers during her visit to Jerusalem.

“Anti-Americanism has a long pedigree, but that only makes it more irrational”

Anti-Americanism is nothing new, but as Janet Albrechtsen writes, America deserves better.

maybe it’s time to check what it is that drives animosity towards the US. It is not anti-American to disagree about US policies in Iraq or on Kyoto or in Guantanamo Bay; reasonable people can differ over how the Bush administration handles critical issues. And if protesting in the streets is your thing, go ahead. Ain’t democracy grand?

Andrei S. Markovits, author of Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America, told The Australian he is a card-carrying progressive signing up to every seminal Left issue. But he cannot stomach the toxic anti-Americanism, a staple of his side of politics.

“European anti-Americanism is becoming an unprecedented Europe-wide lingua franca” - a “key mobilising agent” for a common European identity. It has, quite literally, become the last acceptable prejudice, sanctioned by the highest levels of government. Europeans may bicker over an EU constitution, but they can agree on who they hate. They hate America.

In addition I have drawn from some of her articles and interviews. I republish the information with her blessing, but this summary is completely my own.

In an interview with Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Bat Ye’or explained how French President Charles de Gaulle, disappointed by the loss of the French colonies in Africa and the Middle East as well as with France’s waning influence in the international arena, decided in the 1960’s to create a strategic alliance with the Arab and Muslim world to compete with the dominance of the United States and the Soviet Union.

SPIEGEL: You are trying to say that critics of Islam are systematically silenced in Germany?

Tibi: Yes. Even the comparatively moderate Turkish organization DITIB says there are no Islamists, only Islam and Muslims — anything else is racism. That means that you can no longer criticize the religion. Accusing somebody of racism is a very effective weapon in Germany. Islamists know this: As soon as you accuse someone of demonizing Islam, then the European side backs down. I have also been accused of such nonsense, even though my family can trace its roots right back to Muhammad and I myself know the Koran by heart.

Bush to talk about world affairs and the ways to solve those issues,” he said. “The debate should be go uncensored in order for the American people to be able to listen to what we say and they should not restrict the American people from hearing the truth.”

Now that is laughable! Uncensored? Please! No where in the article was this mentioned: Ahmadinejad Claims Holocaust Invented to Embarrass Germany .

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the Holocaust may have been invented by the victorious Allied powers in World War II to embarrass Germany.

“Is it not a reasonable possibility that some countries that had won the war made up this excuse to constantly embarrass the defeated people … to bar their progress,” Ahmadinejad said in the letter.

France and Germany Make Way for Muslim Nations

France disappointed the U.N. with its surprise announcement that it is sending only 200 troops instead of the thousands that were anticipated. The absence of the French and the refusal of Germany to place its soldiers in a situation of direct confrontation leaves Muslim nations with a larger percentage of the proposed force.
Indonesia and Malaysia each have offered to send 1,000 troops. Neither country has diplomatic ties with Israel, and Malaysia as recently as last week encouraged the world to cut off diplomatic ties with Jerusalem. Israel has objected to the placement of troops from countries with which it does not have diplomatic relations.
Turkey has offered to send 5,000 men, more than any other country. However, Turkey also has been a major transit point for Hizbullah terrorist weapons, according to Israeli intelligence and comments made at an American State Department briefing Thursday.
Italy has proposed sending between 2,000 and 3,000 soldiers, but has also made statements indicating sympathy for Hizbullah. A government minister termed the terrorists’ kidnapping of IDF soldiers a “military action,” and the government emphasized it would not try to disarm Hizbullah.
Prime Minister Romano Prodi told an Italian news service, “The fact that it won’t be Italy who will disarm Hizbullah militia seems to me to be a moot point, also because I don’t think the attempt would be productive.”
Morocco, which has ties with Israel and has a growing militant Muslim population, has offered to send 1,500-2,000 troops. Like many other nations, it wants a clearer definition from the UN of what is expected of the soldiers and when they are to open fire.

  • According to the German scholar Matthias Küntzel, “the Berlin daily the Tagesspiegel published a letter-to-the-editor from Dr. Mounir Herzallah, a Shiite from the South of Lebanon. Dr. Herzallah reports on how Hezbollah-terrorists came to his town, dug a munitions depot and then built a school and a residence directly over it. He writes: ‘Laughing, a local sheikh explained to me that the Jews lose either way: either because the rockets are fired at them or because, if they attack munitions depot, they are condemned by world public opinion on account of the dead civilians.’ Hezbollah, he says, uses the civilian population ‘as a human shield and then when they are dead as propaganda.’”
  • Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, declared that “War is deceit.” Specifically, he taught that lying was permissible in battle.[1] While the doctrines of religious deception (taqiyya and kitman) are most often identified with Shi’ite Islam, and ostensibly rejected by Sunnis, because they were sanctioned by the Prophet, they can still be found in traditions that Sunni Muslims consider reliable, and are practiced among Salafis. Jihadists today have spoken of the usefulness of deceptive practices.
  • Americans and Westerners are not used to dealing with carefully orchestrated and large-scale deception of this kind. It is time that it be recognized as a weapon of warfare, and an extremely potent one at that. Qana has already largely accomplished what it was supposed to. It will now take its place beside the Danish cartoons, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and all the rest as a useful focal point for Muslim outrage and a magnet for jihad recruitment.

Angela Merkel won the battle to be Germany’ first female chancellor

Yahoo Germany broke new political ground as Angela Merkel won the battle to be its first female chancellor, heading a government uniting the country’s two biggest parties and ending Gerhard Schroeder’s grip on power.

Schroeder, who has led Europe’s biggest economy for the past seven years, will play no role in the new left-right administration, sources in his Social Democrats (SPD) said on Monday, but secured key ministries for his party.

Merkel immediately said there was no alternative to urgent reforms designed to revive the ailing economy, crippled by sluggish growth and unemployment at currently more than 11 percent.

She said the accord would pave the way for formal coalition negotiations, probably to start next week, and her Christian Union alliance would take six ministries, with the SPD getting eight cabinet posts.

“We have achieved something big, we have the basis for coalition talks,” she told a press conference.

Conservative challenger Angela Merkel’s party won the most votes in German elections Sunday but fell short of a clear mandate to govern, according to official results. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder staged a dramatic comeback and proclaimed that he should head the next government.

The vote heralded the end of Schroeder’s seven-year tenure but left in doubt who will follow. The inconclusive results make it likely that Germany’s next government would be weakened because of the narrow vote margin and difficulties in forming a coalition.

The vote centered on different visions of Germany’s role in the world and how to fix its sputtering economy. Schroeder touted the country’s role as a European leader and counterbalance to America, while Merkel pledged to reform the economy and strengthen relations with Washington.

At 77% voter turnout, they are doing better than us, but as for decisive elections…well I guess we aren’t the only ones!

BERLIN - The conservative challenger to Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder kicked off her campaign for next month’s elections calling for more jobs and economic growth, even as polls showed the chancellor’s party gaining in popularity.

Yet Schroeder’s Social Democrats — whose popularity was up two points to 28 percent — remain well behind Angela Merkel’s conservatives, who polled 42 percent, according to the survey by the TNS Emnid research for the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.

Crowds shouting “Angie! Angie!” welcomed Merkel in Essen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia where her Christian Democrats and their sister party, the Bavarian Christian Social Union ousted the Social Democrats in state balloting three months ago. The defeat caused Schroeder to call for new elections.

“Now the point is to get out of this misery, we need growth, economical growth is the way we need to grow as we are last in Europe. And that is not right,” Merkel told the crowd. “That is not adequate for Germany - Germany can do more.”
