Follow the money: Welcome to Barack Obama’s “Social Investment Fund Network.”

The Democrat Party platform’s hidden Soros Slush Fund

Copyright 2008The Democrat Party platform is like a bag of pork rinds. You never know what high-fat liberal government morsel you’re gonna get.

Buried in the 94-page document is a noble-sounding proposal to create a “Social Investment Fund Network.” The program would provide federal money to “social entrepreneurs and leading nonprofit organizations [that] are assisting schools, lifting families out of poverty, filling health care gaps, and inspiring others to lead change in their own communities.” The Democrat Party promises to “support these results-oriented innovators” by creating an office to “coordinate government and nonprofit efforts” and then showering “a series of grants” on the chosen groups “to replicate these programs nationwide.”

Surprise: Pelosi suddenly open, sort of, to a vote on drilling

She just doesn’t get it does she?  We just bailed out the housing and banking industries to the tune of $300 Billion, and this clown learned nothing from the moral of the story….

“They have this thing that says drill offshore in the protected areas,” Pelosi said. “We can do that. We can have a vote on that.”

She indicated such a vote would have to be part of a larger package that included other policies, like releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which she said could bring down prices in a matter of days.

“But it has to be part of something that says we want to bring immediate relief to the public and is not just a hoax on them,” Pelosi continued.

She even indicated that she might support a package that includes drilling. She said her decision on whether to support such legislation would depend on how the policies are packaged.

Are Far Left Groups Like MoveOn Secretly Working For The RNC?

Today we have back to back examples that show how desperation leads to stupidity. Although I am sure that any number of you could point out how the stupidity was always there.  Anyhoo, let’s start with this MoveOn ad (H/T to HotAir):

A series of new MoveOn.org radio advertisements looks like they could backfire, big-time.

The liberal group is up with ads against six House Republicans attacking them for their support of offshore drilling. Problem is: most of the targets represent energy-rich districts where drilling is viewed favorably, to put it mildly.

One target, Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), represents a west Texas district where the discovery of oil in the 1940s created wealth throughout the region, and the energy industry has since dominated the region’s economy.

And four of the six GOP targets hold heavily Republican seats and aren’t even facing credible challengers this election.

Calling the Democrats’ bluff

House Republicans Challenge Democrats to Join Fight for Lower Energy Prices

WASHINGTON, DC – House Republicans today sent a letter to every member of the Democratic caucus requesting they join Republicans and the American people in calling for Speaker Nancy Pelosi to reconvene the House of Representatives and pass a comprehensive, “all of the above” energy plan.

“If you agree that Congress should not be taking a five-week vacation until we address the energy crisis, will you join us in publicly calling on Speaker Pelosi to reconvene the House and allow a vote on increasing American-made energy,” the entire Republican leadership said in the letter.

Republicans have remained in Washington, D.C., since Speaker Pelosi adjourned the House for a five-week vacation last Friday in an attempt to silence the minority and deny the American people a vote to provide relief from our nation’s energy crisis.

Who Said It: “America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children.”

I’ll give you a hint, his bitterhalf can claim this quote: “Sometimes it’s easier to hold onto your own stereotypes and misconceptions. It makes you feel justified in your ignorance. That’s America.”

Answer:   Once again, Obama got off the teleprompter and put his foot directly in his mouth.

Obama was for the energy policy before he was against it!

Promise: “Gang of 10″ compromise on energy

If it is as presented, it is a great start.  Conservation, exploration, with the ability to drill in the OCS!

Ed adds:

The plan would lift restrictions off of the Atlantic coast and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Drilling would take place 50 miles or more from shore to buffer the coast from any potential environmental damage. The report does not specify whether the plan will open the interior for drilling for oil shale and natural gas.

Those in the gang of 10 are Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La; Saxby Chambliss; R-Ga, John Thune, R-S.D.; Ben Nelson, D-Neb.; Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; Mark Pryor, D-Ark.; Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.; Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark.; and Bob Corker, R-Tenn.

Harry Reid, on his way out of town, issued a mildly supportive statement, and Nancy Pelosi hasn’t yet commented. This compromise could save the Democrats from their own leadership, and it represents a major rebellion against the hard-line demagoguery provided by Reid and Pelosi. This expansion represents a good start to restoring some common sense to American energy policy and marginalizing the radical environmentalists who have taken it hostage for a generation.

UPDATED: Hell — otherwise known as Congress — has officially frozen over..UPDATE: Floor revolt: No vacation for House Republicans

UPDATE From Michelle Malkin:

From: Stipicevic, John

Subject: WHIP FLOOR UPDATE

Although, this Democrat Majority just Adjourned for the Democrat 5-Week Vacation, House Republicans are continuing to fight on the House Floor. Although the lights, mics and C-SPAN camera’s have been turned off, House Republicans are on the Floor speaking to the taxpayers in the gallery who, not surprisingly, agree with Republican Energy proposals.

All Republicans who are in town are encouraged to come to the House Floor.

End update

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For the first time since the 1950s, Members will skip town today for the August recess without either chamber having passed a single appropriations bill. Then again, Democrats appear ready to sacrifice their whole agenda, even spending, rather than allow new domestic energy production.

Pelosi And Democrats Will Not Allow Drilling

Her words, not mine:

“I’m trying to save the planet; I’m trying to save the planet,” she says impatiently when questioned. “I will not have this debate trivialized by their excuse for their failed policy.”

“I respect the office that I hold,” she says. “And when you win the election, you win the majority, and what is the power of the speaker? To set the agenda, the power of recognition, and I am not giving the gavel away to anyone.”

It is her party’s failed policies that have us in this energy mess.  We never should have gotten to $2.50/gallon.

She is right about the gavel, it won’t be given away, it will be taken.  The Democrats, for all their faults, will not allow her to destroy their gains, nor will the moderate Democrats sit back and have the far left destroy their party.

This, In A Nutshell, Sums Up The Entire Democratic Energy Policy: DNC funds broken wind turbine

“It’s a new technology, so they don’t have the bugs out of it,” he said. “Since there’s so many people watching [the turbine], they might be better served to go to a more reliable model.”

The eastern Colorado wind turbine tapped for the Democratic National Convention’s carbon-offset program has one problem: It doesn’t generate any electricity. Convention organizers are now being questioned for their eagerness to market those credits to delegates.

The DNC has contracted with Vermont-based NativeEnergy to offer delegates “Green challenge” carbon offsets to soften the environmental impact of convention travel. That money is then invested in carbon-free “green” energy sources around the country, including a wind turbine installed this year by the Wray School District RD-2. But a Face The State investigation reveals the district’s turbine has never produced marketable energy due to massive equipment malfunctions.

UPDATED: Profiles in Idiocy: Nancy Pelosi Calls for Strategic Reserve Release..UPDATE: House Republicans Block Measure To Release Oil From SPR

nancy_pelosi_facelift.jpg

In response to the current oil and energy crisis, we were told by Democrite Leadership that “…we can’t drill our way out of this!”. Even though oil is a commodity, increasing supply to balance demand would not bring prices down according to experts at the Democrap Ministry of Economics. We were told to just suck it up and wait for alternative energy sources that do not exist or are not practical.

Meanwhile, the Democraps would go after the oil companies, they would regulate the speculators out of existence, and otherwise do nothing at all that would produce one more gallon of fuel.

Now Pelosi, in an unceasing effort to somehow make this whole crisis look like the Republicans caused it, plus attack Bush, is calling on Bush to release 70 million barrels from the Strategic Reserve. In addition to this being a bad idea because the reason we have a Reserve is for emergencies, 70 million barrels is about a one-week supply for the U.S., it is insignificant on the world oil stage. Then what?

HOPE: Senate Republicans have threatened to block nearly all other bills pending before the August recess if Democrats refuse to vote with them on expanding offshore drilling

harryreid13.jpg

I had to pinch myself on this one:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said bills that do not pertain to energy can wait until after the August recess, with gas prices now surpassing $4 per gallon. McConnell and top Republicans indicated Wednesday they would oppose any procedural votes to take up other legislation, which require 60 votes to succeed. …

Following swift Senate action on the narrow energy bill, Reid wanted the Senate to approve a massive defense authorization bill, an overhaul of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, legislation to protect reporters’ sources, an extension of expiring energy tax incentives, and a major package of 33 bills held up by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

But Republicans are planning to keep the Senate on the energy issue until their demands are resolved. The massive housing-rescue package might be the only other measure that gets valuable floor time before the August recess.

Baghdad Jim McDermott Proposes Gas Stamps For The Poor

Or slush funds for states,  depending on what the definition of creativity is:

“Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, introduced legislation today to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Americans struggling to survive under crushing gasoline prices.”

“The Emergency Gasoline Assistance Act (H.R. 6561) would create a program to provide $5 billion to states as a one-time grant with the money designated to provide assistance to families of modest means to purchase gasoline. This program could provide every family that is currently living below the federal poverty threshold with $500 in assistance. State governors would have the flexibility to use the money to create programs that target the specific needs of their communities.”

McDermott said he did it in the spirit of JFK’s quote:

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

Since Bush Lifted Drilling Restrictions: The Dollar Is Rising As Oil Prices Are Dropping

The price of crude has dropped over $20 a barrel in less than two weeks.  The stock market has improved and the dollar has strengthened at the same time:

Overseas stock markets were higher and Wall Street index futures pointed to a solid open as the cost of oil retreated further and traders turned a bit more hopeful about the economy.

Light sweet crude oil for September delivery was down $2.17 at US$126.25 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after dropping more than $3 in the previous session as Hurricane Dolly looked likely to avoid oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Crude now is down by more than $20 a barrel from its July 11 peak above $147 - a surge that had raised worries that inflation would cripple the economy.

According to this Bureau of Land Management release yesterday:

DNC Convention Committee Is Using The City’s Gas Pumps To Fill Up On Fuel, Avoiding State and Federal Highway Taxes….RNC Is Getting Their Gas At The Pump

The Rocky Mountain News reports:

The committee hosting the Democratic National Convention is using the city’s gas pumps to fill up on fuel, avoiding state and federal highway taxes, officials said today.

“There’s something there that just doesn’t seem right to me because, in a sense, you’re saying then that the officials who pass the laws are not willing to live by them, and that concerns me,” Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz said.

The issue came up during the council’s weekly meeting with Mayor John Hickenlooper when the Public Works Department requested authorization to be reimbursed by the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee for use of “fueling facilities, fuel and car washes.”

“By doing it this way, by running it through our Fleet Maintenance, that means that that fuel does not pay state or federal highway taxes,” Faatz said.

The Democrats Plan: “Now, lawmakers quietly are talking about raising fuel taxes by a dime from the current 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.3 cents on diesel fuel.”

“Now, lawmakers(Liberal Democrats) quietly are talking about raising fuel taxes by a dime from the current 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.3 cents on diesel fuel.”:

Just three years ago, that trust fund enjoyed a surplus of $10 billion. Even without a tax freeze, the fund is projected to finish 2009 with a deficit of $3 billion. That that could grow as Americans drive less and buy less gas because of higher pump prices.

The consequence is that only about $27 billion in federal money will be available next year to states and local governments for new infrastructure investment even though the current highway act calls for spending $41 billion a year. For many, the solution is to raise rather than suspend or cut federal fuel taxes, which haven’t changed since 1993.

So they had a surplus, but since the Democrats took over, it is now running in the red!
