Democrats are finding more excuses to ignore the promise they made when they took over Congress that they wouldn’t pass laws increasing the budget deficit.

Promise? What Promise?

Democrats say a six-month extension of jobless benefits will stimulate the moribund economy and they characterize the new college aid for veterans as a war-related cost.

But they come on the heels of tossing out their fiscal responsibility rules for a $168 billion economic rescue package of tax rebates for most Americans three months ago and a $50 billion measure two months earlier rescuing some 20 million middle-class taxpayers from an average $2,000 in higher taxes.

Deficit hawks in both parties worry that the stimulus bill opened the door to further deficit-swelling legislation. They view the rule — dubbed “PAYGO” in inside-the-Beltway slang for pay-as-you-go — as a key bulwark against Congress’ propensity to spend outside its means.

So welfare stimulates the economy? Really? That is about as intelligent as allowing the Teamsters to police themselves.

 When Democrats Go Post-al Indeed

att00019.gif

Oh my how I do love to read of tantrums on the left! James Wolcott tells you of the Kossacks dividing over Hillary and Barack, while Matt just realized that he has been marginalized by the very people he helped to put in power.

And then there are the number of people who take issue with a basic request for competence at the Obama campaign with regards to communications. People apparently don’t want Obama sending out talking points or talking to bloggers, preferring that bloggers stay independent. Well excuse me, why do you think Obama surrogates suck on TV? They aren’t getting fucking talking points, you idiots. How do you think this works?

While we’re on Obama, consider the ridiculous defenses of Obama going on Fox News and lying about his intent to ‘take them on’, to which I could refer you to Chris’s post once again. The straw men arguments were just disgusting and out in force.

Jane Hamsher on January 10, 2008:

If either campaign thinks that winning the nomination is worth tearing the party apart by igniting America’s sexist and racist strains to their own benefit, it’s stupid and shortsighted. Just because the Republicans will go there in the general is not a reason to start now.

Seven years later, where are we?

As angry truckers encircled the Capitol in a horn-blaring caravan and consumers across the country agonized over $60 fill-ups, the issue of high fuel prices flared on the campaign trail on Monday, sharply dividing the two Democratic candidates.
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lined up with Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, in endorsing a plan to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline, 18.4 cents a gallon, for the summer travel season. But Senator Barack Obama, Mrs. Clinton’s Democratic rival, spoke out firmly against the proposal, saying it would save consumers little and do nothing to curtail oil consumption and imports.
While Mr. Obama’s view is shared by environmentalists and many independent energy analysts, his position allowed Mrs. Clinton to draw a contrast with her opponent in appealing to the hard-hit middle-class families and older Americans who have proven to be the bedrock of her support. She has accused Mr. Obama of being out of touch with ordinary Americans who are struggling to meet their mortgages and gas up their cars and trucks.
Mrs. Clinton said at a rally on Monday morning in Graham, N.C., that she would introduce legislation to impose a windfall-profits tax on oil companies and use the revenue to suspend the gasoline tax temporarily.

Pelosi Has No Idea What We Pay For Gas

In March, the national average was $3.24/gallon. As of April 21, the average was $3.508 with the change from a week ago being 0.119 and the change from a year ago being 0.639 .

Via MM comes this video of Larry King pressing Nancy on her promise to lower prices, which hasn’t happened:

“>

“$2.56 on average”? A couple of things wrong here:

1. If the price was a dollar something and it is now $2.56, how does that equate to the prices have trippled?
2. Larry King of all people corrected her. He tells her it is actually $3.50 and she says “Oh, it’s down six cents.”

Hey Nancy, the average price in SF is $3.98/gallon. In California as of April 21, 2008: the average was $3.846 with the change from a week ago being 0.072 and the change from a year ago being 0.530.

Lawsuits and investigations take time Nancy, the people need relief now. Suspend the federal tax on gasoline!

From Roll Call

After days of castigating Republicans for allegedly stalling a veterans benefits package, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) himself decided to postpone the start of the debate — and, indeed the start of Wednesday’s session — until 5 p.m. in order to accommodate the schedules of his party’s presidential hopefuls, Democratic sources said.

Obama Changes His Surge Stance And Looks Like The Village Idiot: “If, on the other hand, our criteria is a messy, sloppy status quo but there’s not huge outbreaks of violence, there’s still corruption, but the country is struggling along, but it’s not a threat to its neighbors and it’s not an al-Qaida base, that seems to me an achievable goal within a measurable timeframe,”

At the Democratic Debate hosted by ABC News:

OBAMA: What we have to do is to begin a phased redeployment to send a clear signal to the Iraqi government that we are not going to be there in perpetuity. Now, it will — we should be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in.

I welcome the genuine reductions of violence that have taken place, although I would point out that much of that violence has been reduced because there was an agreement with tribes in Anbar province, Sunni tribes, who started to see, after the Democrats were elected in 2006, you know what? — the Americans may be leaving soon. And we are going to be left very vulnerable to the Shias. We should start negotiating now.

 The Petraeus Effect

The WSJ has this must read article, I will give you just a taste:

As General David Petraeus briefs Congress this week on Iraq, it’s clear his surge has achieved remarkable results. The most crucial is that the U.S. can no longer be defeated militarily in Iraq, which could not be said a year ago. The question now is whether Washington will squander these gains by withdrawing so quickly that we could still lose politically.

A political loss has always been a strong possibility given the fact that the majority of the Democrats in Congress have done everything in their power to lose this war militarily.

As we await General Petraeus’ testimony, take a look at this: Sadr calls off the Million Man March

Pelosi warns Petraeus “I hope we don’t hear any glorification of what happened in Basra,”

Read Robert’s post to update yourself on what this idiot is talking about:

“I hope we don’t hear any glorification of what happened in Basra,” said Pelosi, referring to a recent military offensive against Shiite militants in the city led by the Iraqi government and supported by U.S. forces.

Although powerful Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr agreed to a ceasefire after six days of fighting, Pelosi wondered why the U.S. was caught off guard by the offensive and questioned how the ceasefire was achieved, saying the terms were “probably dictated from Iran.”

“We have to know the real ground truths of what is happening there, not put a shine on events because of a resolution that looks less violent when in fact it has been dictated by al-Sadr, who can grant or withhold that call for violence,” Pelosi said.

Now this is rich:

So, there’s a deli inside the U.S. Capitol building. Nothing fancy, just take-out. There used to be a phone next to the cashier, but the Democrats have pulled the plug — kinda, sorta.

Here’s the deal: The deli is run by a management team that changed after Dems took back power, courtesy of the House Administration Committee. Management decided a few weeks ago that the cashiers were making too many personal calls so they took the phone out.

Sources say deli employees complained that they had no phone in case of a personal emergency. They say the word they got back was, “Buy a cellphone.” Problem is, the deli’s in the basement and cellphones don’t work.

We’re told two weeks ago, one of the employees has a son who had an asthma attack at school and school officials had no way of reaching her. She didn’t find out her kid was taken to the hospital til she came home from work.

Senate Rejected the Pork Moratorium, 29-71

No surprise

Even the entreaties of the three senators running for president weren’t enough to persuade their colleagues Thursday to curb their appetite for earmarks — the practice of designating federal dollars for pet projects.
Senators soundly rejected a one-year moratorium backed by the presidential hopefuls — Republican John McCain and Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton — even though it put senators from both parties at odds with their presidential contenders.
The vote — 29 in favor of the proposal, 71 opposed — again demonstrated the enduring popularity of earmarks, even though they have figured prominently in recent congressional scandals, including one that landed former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham of Rancho Santa Fe in prison.
It also underscored the conflicting political interests of the presidential candidates — who see a strong stand against earmarks as a way to show fiscal discipline — and their Senate colleagues who see bringing home the bacon as a way to show constituents they are getting something back for their taxes.

The Republicans asked that it be closed because of the sensativity of the material. Look for me to post an undate after the Democrats go running to the press and give full disclosure of all the intelligence presented:

During the session, the chamber will discuss an update to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that has been gridlocked for months over the issue of granting immunity to telecom companies who aided the government in the wake of the Sept. 11.

Following the closed session, the House will debate the FISA bill, which does not include immunity. The Senate has already passed their own version with immunity — a bill President Bush has urged the House to sign.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) agreed to the session Thursday afternoon.

Get the picture?

“As we look back in history, the Founding Fathers would be cringing to hear people talking about eliminating earmarks,” Reid said, noting that the Founders dictated in the Constitution that all spending should originate in Congress, not the executive branch.

Ed point out this link from Citizens Against Government Waste :

Thomas Jefferson made a similar prediction in a letter to James Madison dated March 6, 1796, challenging Madison’s proposition for improvements to roads used in a system of national mail delivery. Jefferson wrote:
Have you considered all the consequences of your proposition respecting post roads? I view it as a source of boundless patronage to the executive, jobbing to members of Congress & their friends, and a bottomless abyss of public money. You will begin by only appropriating the surplus of the post office revenues; but the other revenues will soon be called into their aid, and it will be a scene of eternal scramble among the members, who can get the most money wasted in their State; and they will always get most who are meanest.
